StarCraft 2 to Support Priced Maps, Mods

by Nick Breckon, Aug 21, 2009 4:18pm PDT

A future StarCraft II Marketplace service was announced today at BlizzCon. The Battle.net store, planned to be added to StarCraft II after the game's launch, will allow map makers to publish both free and "premium" maps.

Premium maps will carry a fee, meaning mod and map makers can sell their content directly on Battle.net.

"We want to make sure that the best amateur game designers out there are making maps for StarCraft 2, and not for Kongregate or Steam or anything like that," said Blizzard's Rob Pardo.

"Think about it like this: something like Defense of the Ancients, I think, would be something like a free map because it doesn't have a lot of original content," he added, while noting that Blizzard made the announcement today in order to give map makers time to start thinking about ideas.

"We totally intend for there to be a lot of free content," he assured the crowd.

  • Hear that? That's the sound of EA only before they cleaned up their act. They're now called Blizzard.

BS people when everyone knows all they're after is more money. It's just a small outcry here, but the common people will find out. Everything filters down from the top geeks in social circles as far as gaming goes. All the circles have them, I'm sure you do too. Fanbois will be set fire to and word of mouth will travel.

Blizzard is fricking retarded. Ever since WoW they've just been practicing the same thing. Even now they're pushing more expansion packs out by only allowing 5 levels per expansion pack instead of 10. It's no longer about making a good game or a good community, its about making a huge profit.

What's worse is they try to play it off as pure innocence. We wanna make sure they're making good quality maps and not being shilled by the big conglomerates. Oh, here, you can put this up on our site and we'll take a small portion of the proceedings just to ensure quality of services.

It's getting worse and worse with every headline. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I hope Google make a game divison and kicks their ass. Since Relic sorta fell down with DoW2, Stardock isn't doing anything special as of right yet (in terms of publishing good content), and I haven't heard much of Big Huge Games in awhile.
