PS2 Compatibility 'Not Coming Back' to PlayStation 3

53
The ability to play PlayStation 2 games on a PlayStation 3--supported in the first iterations of the hardware but removed in later revisions--will not be coming back, Sony hardware marketing director John Koller has definitively stated.

"[Backwards compatibility] won't be returning," Koller told Ars Technica while discussing the PlayStation 3 hardware, which just received a lower price point and a redesigned, slimmer aesthetic. "It's not coming back, so let me put that on the table."

"It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," he explained. "We've got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They've buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies."

In a separate chat with Kotaku, Koller added that "most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]...it's well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they're ready to jump into the PlayStation 3."

However, those with an early model of the PlayStation 3 can breathe a sigh of relief, as Sony has previously said that it will not retroactively remove or revoke the backwards compatibility functionality from those models with a firmware or system update.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

I guess saying "I told you so" doesn't really achieve anything does it?

They want to re-sell you God of War, MGS, Okami, they will be on the PSN store after some emulation work, just like Microsoft has done - in maybe the next 18 months, mark my words, re-selling you old games is far far better than spending money to add hardware to the system.

That being said, this is a real shame for the PS3 in say 18 months if and when the PS2 is no longer manufactured, I was kind of hoping they might bring back PS2 emulation then at least so that the PS2 catalogue is still possible to be played on a new console.

      I would totally re-buy ports of PS2 games I own if (I had a PS3).

Have you looked at PS2 hardware sales numbers lately? That 18 months figure is ridiculous, they're going to be selling the hardware for years and years to come

There is going to come a time where the PS2 is no longer sold, the PS3 is and it would be nice for them to make an optional PS2 BC version of the PS3 :/

PS2 breaks, PS2 no longer for sale, wouldn't it be nice to buy an all in one?

Not everyone who wants BC owned a PS2 in the past. I never did, by I have enjoyed played a select few PS2 games on my 80GB Soft-BC PS3. If they were to offer them for purchase via PSN, I'd be all over it.

Plus there's the allure of having a library of games at your disposal without having to swap disks or warehouse a bunch of plastic cases.

When the PS2 is no longer being sold, Sony won't care at all that you can't play PS2 games anymore.

Sure at some point the games will be available, Virtual Console-style, for play somewhere. But even if they never are, Sony doesn't care. They've more than made their money on those games and that system.

That's one of the things I really don't like about console gaming - when the shit breaks you're at the mercy of whether or not the company releases it later for emulation, or whether or not someone writes an emulator and/or rips the game. With PC gaming you can, in theory, play the games forever (granted, need DOSBox for that but still)

True. It is easier to play old, really old and really really old stuff on the pc. I look at consoles as specialized PCs. They might do less stuff but they do it really well. Example: Xbox 360 doesn't run ms office but it sure does handle burnout paradise really well (down to controllers, and voicechat, etc..)

Correct. If not here in the US, certainly in developing countries where video game penetration is low.

As long as they sell Shadow of the Colossus through the PSN, then I don't care.

I bet by the time they stop selling PS2's PC PS2 emulation will be pretty good.

This is exactly the reason. They want to sell old stuff to you all over again instead of providing the extra value of backward compatibility that would make you want to upgrade to a PS3. The extra chip for backward compatibility probably would only cost them like 5 bucks to include in the PS3 at this point.
