Morning Discussion

For three days now you have sat huddled in the corner. It is pitch black, your windows boarded from the inside. You are naked, cold and hungry, yet all you do is rock. A concerned neighbour called the old bill on Monday. "Are you... we've had some reports." Through the letter box, you insisted that you were quite alright. You will not leave. They muttered outside your door for some time but eventually left with a sigh. They will see.

Then. Birds scatter from the trees. A dog barks in the distance. Your neighbour's car alarm goes off. Your ears catch a slight rumble. Is that...? The first sirens begin.

BlizzCon is coming.

It has a 78 going on metacritic so far: http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/wolfenstein

Sounds pretty generic and forgettable. I'm taking a pass on this one.

Gamespot liked it, I bought it, but had some serious WoW raiding to do last night and didn't get a chance to pop it in. Very seldom do Gamespot's reviews lead me astray, so I have high hopes it'll be a fun, if non-revolutionary shooter.

RTCW wasn't spectacular, it was ok though. Mp was kinda fun. ET was awesome but that has hardly anything to do with the wolfenstein franchise. Imo they really don't need to update the series any longer.

I'm loving. I like the semi open world feel of it and I like that there's a metric ton of hidden stuff to find and collect. I'm also loving the art direction - I really think they nailed the atmosphere of the game. Very underrated judging by the reviews.

Its pretty boring IMO. I've beaten 3 main levels and a couple of side quests from the town hub and its not really pulling me in for more. The guns sound beefy and the aiming is really good, the controls are basically just as tight as COD4. However, the AI is very bad they always blindly rush at you when indoors, and in open areas they spam grenades and rarely move if you throw them back or your own. Most of the features seem like they were just checking off boxes like weapon upgrades (there is only enough gold on 1 playthrough to upgrade 1 or 2 guns), a town hub (which gets really repetitive when you're fighting down the same streets over and over to get to the next mission), powers (the veil offers bullet time, and others but aren't really that exciting, and being in the veil makes everything green and not that attractive aesthetically). Overall its not even as good as I hoped. I was hoping that it would have been at least like Quake IV, a dumb but fun game with great weapons and set pieces. There isn't anything keeping my attention despite all the laundry list of features. Rent it at best.

Do you have it set to easy mode or something? I don't know what you are talking about with the AI I find it to be most challenging. I have had them rush me when I'm reloading, try to flank me, I even saw one dude run away down the street and come back with with a whole squad. I like that in the hub you get to have little skirmishes it helps break up the "go to check point get mission" I think it keeps the game more engaging. The mire power is so damned useful, I have clicked it on and burst though a door and killed everyone before they can get a shot off. I don't see how that isn't cool. I don't think we are playing the same game. I was concerned by the lack of hype at first but I have pleasantly surprised.

No, I'm playing on the second hardest difficulty. It's boring me that's all, there isn't anything new here and what it attempts to implement as new comes off as rushed. The town Hub is extremely repetitive, I just want to get to the next mission, not fight Nazis down the same street 100 times. There are hunts of awesomeness like the zero G explosions and the boss fights are very inspired and old school but everything else just isn't exciting me. They turned Wolf into a CoD clone, Quake IV was fun because it retained the same frantic gameplay. Graphically it's a mess, some levels look great while others like the town hub look like a Quake 3 mod. It's just not consistent.

See that's the thing I didn't like Quake 4 sure it was fun to go battle the Strogg again but it wasn't my cup of tea. I also think COD4 is a great game so I guess that is why I like Wolfenstein so much.

Can anyone comment on mouse lag on the PC version? I'm looking through the Wolenstein forums and it seems like the port is a disaster. I'm used to bad ports at this point but mouse lag in-game would be a dealbreaker.

I'd really like to know how difficult it is to implement proper mouse control. Since so many games screw it up these days, I have to assume its either the most difficult thing to do or (most likely) the people doing the port simply don't care.

I think carmack mentioned mentioned something about how multicore architecture can result in latency if not well implemented. usually id software games are the gold standard for latency free gaming and excellent mousinput with no lag whatsoever.

I'll say. Say what you will about Doom 3 but it controlled like a dream. I really wish developers paid attention and put control/feel first, because there are too many good games ruined by this.

      I posted this yesterday.

Wolfenstein PC Review after playing SP halfway through.

I have to say this game is pretty fucking fun, I got it after work yesterday and played it for roughly 4- 5 hours total. The SP is absolutely one of the funnest FPS experiences, its like a mix of COD (shooting, bobbing, nades)+GTA (open world town to explore!)+Soul Reaver (the veil, power ups).

The thing that I hated at first but grew to like was the compass, It keeps you from getting totally frustrated when your trying to find an exit. The games not insanely linear like Doom or Quake either, and has some beautiful outside/inside areas with a multiple paths and tons of shit to collect (like gold to buy upgrades, maps and intel). Another great aspect is the weapons upgrade system, you can buy ammo dumps, extra clips, silencers, powers for your particle cannon (disintegrating Nazi's!), and also new additional permanent power ups for you veil powers.

About the open world town, it's a fairly large town with some shops and bars that you can visit and talk with people at between missions. Also while walking around to your next spot or simply exploring you will encounter random squads of Nazi soldiers to dispatch so it keeps the action going when traveling (another time the compass comes in handy, since finding shops without it is a pain in the ass).

The graphics are really good, not like Doom 4/Rage good of course, but i thought overall they looked better than than any of the promos they've shown and definitely are on par with some of the major contenders (GOW fanboys f.o.). Fire effects and lighting are this games strong point, although the cutscenes all look like they were animated back in '02.

*Almost forgot the enemies, they are everything you wanted in wolfenstein and more, your standard soldiers are COD fare, with the addition of Tesla power armor 'shock troopers', and magicians that are so fast you have to slow time down to catch them. There are some interesting bosses, but nothing too massive (Hulk gustapo).

Overall great game and was well worth my $50. Also, no DRM. Mein, leben!

Game performance is very similar to ETQW, it runs fine on my 8800GTS at 1920x1200. It was definitely made for a console first but playing it on PC isn't that bad. In fact no complaints from me about the port. Interface is kind of shitty but you don't really need much interface for an id game. I didn't notice any DRM but I could be wrong.
