EVE Dev Unveils Console MMO-FPS 'DUST 514'
by Alice O'Connor, Aug 18, 2009 3:56am PDTThe universe of EVE Online will spread to consoles in an MMO-FPS hybrid named DUST 514, developer CCP announced today at the Game Developers Conference Europe.
DUST 514 will take place on the surface of planets from EVE with a blend of FPS and RTS gameplay, "Giving commanders and ground infantry real-time configurable weapons and modular vehicles to manage dynamic battlefield conditions."
Teased in 2008, DUST has been in development at CCP Shanghai for three years and is headed to "The current generation of consoles"--read "Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3."
CCP says DUST 514 "Will interact directly with EVE Online," and "gives [console players] a chance to become part of one of the most massive cooperative play and social experiences ever," though gives no details on quite how the two will interact.
One possible connection is EVE Online's future 'Ambulation Project' update, which will grant players avatar form to roam space stations, visit space bars and space gamble.

I've always been tempted to try EVE Online. If I suddenly lost all my family, friends, job and interest in life, then I'd definately start playing.

Awesome. I dont think it will work that well but awesome none the less. Now, can I get an orbital bombardment on the kiddies I just hired then refuse to pay them? Because that would be even more awesome!

Finally a great sci fi fps and it's a console exclusive.. These screen shots look amazing. The art is just mindblowing.
What ever happened to sci fi fps? The creative potential of genre is almost unimaginable and this shot is 10 times more awe inspiring than anything I have ever seen in an fps game

This is the kind of creativity I want to see.. Not the same old.. Hey look, the same old WW2 guns and settings!
Yes, we have games like Gears of War and Quake 4, but the industrial grey and brown look starts to get old.. Im looking for something set in a slick, far future setting, and this would have been it..

I think a lot of it has to do with Eve's nature. It's like the MMO that plays hard to get, where other MMO's are like a needy girl or guy. Instead of forcing you to constantly coddle it (grinding xp or renown) to get anywhere, it lets you see it only when you want and have a life outside of it. THIS JUST MAKES ME WANT IT MOOOOOORREEEEE :D

-access to planetary resources, collected by console players, into the overall eve market
-transit of console players warthings by pc capsule pilots
-what about orbital actions? console players could board ships and such
I know there would be balance concerns, but this could be really really cool.

Something tells me there's gonna be a lot of spacebucks riding on if Bob and Charlie can take point C without killing Billy for yelling at his mom with his microphone on.
