It is milking the franchise, but it's been milked to death as it is, anyway.

I think a lot of people on here don't get just how popular the Lego games are with kids. And I'm not talking "oh buy little Billy whatever keeps him happy" people who don't understand what these things are, I'm talking people in their late 30's and early 40's who are gamers and techies and want to play something with their kids.
A guy I know at work who is literally the smartest programmer I know (since I don't know Carmack personally) plays every Lego game to death with his kids. The only thing he wants is more of them. And he already has Rock Band. This game is perfect for him.
Harmonix will probably make the songs importable for you 360/PS3 peeps. Activision is right - when you want to do more than just the song, then DLC doesn't work as an idea. Yes, everyone on this board has a large hard drive in their consoles and broadband. But a lot of people don't, and so they need this in disc form. Especially the kinds of people that buy Lego games (and SIMS expansion packs)
And Penny Arcade made an excellent point a while back - your kid wants to play Rock Band and you let them - but when The Donnas' "Take It Off" comes on you wonder if it was such a good idea. This game looks to be the equivalent of Alvin and the Chipmunks - songs which aren't written just for kids but are also harmless for them to listen to.
It just kills me - AC/DC and The Beatles insist on their own separate games and everyone defends and worships them for it. But a Lego game comes up and people get up in arms about it.

But this game...it...it's totally bizarro-world.
I guess as long as people still scoop this stuff up, there is still a reason to hammer it out. I personally think it's fucking ridiculous, but I'm not developer or publisher with money hats either.
Or perhaps I've answered my own question, and Harmonix are banking on the theory.
