Valve Talks Team Fortress 2 Comic Book Plans, Movie and TV Show Possibilities

In addition to Left 4 Dead 2 details, the latest episode of GameTrailers TV revealed more of Valve's TF2 comic book plans as well as movie and Television show dreams.

Valve co-founder Gabe Newell told GTTV that Michael Avon Oeming--artist on fine comic book 'Powers' and writer of 'Ares'--is onboard, "teaching us about what it means to have a character and do character development in a comic format, how you do storytelling." The comic book was previously said to be by the team behind TF2's "Meet the..." trailers.

"The reason we're doing it is... that we think that's where our customers already are," Newell explained. "They're saying 'Figure this out, don't... license it to somebody else. You're the people who understand the property and we're fans of you, so you have to figure out how to make the movies, the TV shows and the comic books.'"

"TF2 right now is very much at the cutting edge of trying to think through what does a cross-media property look like," declared Newell. "Do you imagine a day when you could have a Team Fortress 2 movie or TV show?" asked host Geoff Keighley, to which he responded replied "Yes, absolutely."

Valve has been fleshing out TF2's characters in its increasingly elaborate "Meet the..." series of vignettes, from humble beginnings in Meet the Heavy, through the Soldier, Engineer, Demoman, Scout and Sniper, with the excellent Meet the Spy most recent.

I am inclined to say no.

The little fake antique advertisements and other things work well as promo material.

But a tv show? A movie? Based on a game that doesn't even have a *plot*? It sounds like they're reaching a bit.

The meet-the videos, especially the last one they did, I thought demonstrated they could do a 15 minute per episode show on adult swim.

They have been getting more and more involved with each of the "Meet the" videos. The spy video had an actual story. They could totally pull off a short show.

TF2 movies and shorts don't need a strong plot full with romance, deceit and whatever ...

the humor of TF2 and the meet the videos is about how the characters interact with each other. Each figure is brimful of personality.

A movie may be stretching it, but TV shorts are definitely achievable.

So your pessimistic comment about my "pessimistic" comment is... what, exactly? It's all too meta for me. What are comment sections for if not for people to post comments? :P
