Why wait for the weekend for a weekend deal? Steam is running a "mid-week madness" sale, offering Call of Duty: World at War for $25, or half-off its regular price.

The sale will run for only two days, ending Thursday, so jump on it soon if it suits your fancy.

If only this game was worth $25...maybe they should mark it off to $5.

Why? Because it's a terrible game. The single player is riddled with horrible game design (sniper sequence in the first Russian mission). It is impossible to connect to a functioning multiplayer server. They either say they are full, and are really empty, or are power leveling servers. That is, if it's even possible to connect to it, half the time it just pretends to be connecting for 30 seconds and then brings you back to the main menu. The zombie mode is inferior to Killing Floor and Left 4 Dead anyways, and the maps vary from horrible to average.

Call of Duty 4 is the superior game in every way. Single player rocks. Multiplayer works perfectly and plays great.

Infinity Ward is a talented development studio with great production values. Treyarch is a leech on Infinity Ward's leg.

So wrong. So very very wrong. But hey, opinions are like ass-holes.

Right, because generic sit around and shoot endless hordes of zombies (but with WW2 guns, wow!) is so much better than one of the best games of 2008, Left 4 Dead. A game that pretty much everyone agrees is one of the more innovative and unique cooperative games on the market.

It's more fun than Left 4 Dead, which is what matters.

Having played both, I find nazi zombies way way way more fun than L4D. More fun than most games actually.

I don't think L4D is all that. It's just a co-op FPS with a bunch of fast moving things that run at you. I played it less than I played this game.

Well, many people see it as much more than that. It's a game that forces you to work as a single unit, not just because it's "hard", but because the mechanics force you to do so to stay alive. It's a game with great, original characters that interact wonderfully. It's an often, competitive game where you desperately try to slay your opponents in Versus. It's a lot of things that I think make for a great experience. I've gotten 90 hours out of it.

WRONG. Spray and Pray 4 isn't set during WWII.

Except...World at War is just a re-skinning of Call of Duty 4 gameplay, but worse. So what does that make World at War...Spray and Pray: With a Thompson?

The weapon differences slow down WaW gameplay a bit.
Also, accurate shots with semi-auto rifles rule online play. Only fools use the Thompson.

No matter how you spin it, World at War is a $50 (or $25, in this instance) mod for COD4 that lives in its shadow.

I'm enjoying the Sp campaign, it's not as good as CoD4, but who cares it's still better than Bioshock.

So then what is L4D? A $50 mod for CS that lives in its shadow?

How thick are you? None of Left 4 Dead is based off of Counter-Strike's mechanics. Is CS 4v100 AI? Does CS have multiple enemy types who can pin you down? Does a CS round take place over a long, linear map and last an hour? Does CS have teammate revival? Does CS have health packs? Does CS have multiple tiers of weapons that you find around the map? Does CS have dynamically spawning enemies?

No. Left 4 Dead is much more of its own game.

All of World at War's mechanics derive from Call of Duty 4's. Do they have a linear singleplayer in which you switch between multiple characters, follow a well voice acted squad leader, mow down endless waves of bad guys, participate in the occasional turret sequence. Do they have the same controls? Do they have the same on-screen HUD? Do they have multiplayer with CS style maps, with the same game modes, in which you unlock weapons by ranking up and then can make custom classes with the same perks?

Yes. World at War is very mod-like.

Yeah L4D is nothing like CS. As for CoD the whole series is very "mod like" The whole series has kept the same setup since the original and even that game was almost identical to MoH Allied Assault. I am unable to get into the multiplayer for the new Cod's now since it feels like a already played them. I still enjoy the single player campaign on them and Zombies and coop on WaW is great.

Well, the game is selling, people are enjoying it.. despite it being 'terrible'. But i'm sure if you mail treyarch and explain to them how horrible the game is, they'll drop down the price to $5.

Sales are not a reflection on quality. Look at Assassin's Creed or BioShock (not bad games, but not worthy of 5 million+ sales). Or the Halo franchise. Or even Counter-Strike, which is quite a bit more popular than it should be.

Exactly, they aren't bad games.. hence why they sell. People enjoy halo, people hate it. same goes for every game out there.

Thing is, if everyone thought of cod5 as you do, then yes it would probably be sitting in the $5 bargain bin collecting dust. But not everyone does, which is why the price is still up there.

Treyarch took what cod4 had, made some improvements, added some new features, and kept the same gameplay that cod4 excelled at, and made it into a great game. Of course many people see it differently, but that's my opinion.

You don't think it has to do with the fact that there is a big fat ass "Call of Duty" in the title? If this was the exact same game but called "Medal of Honor: World at War" it would have sold about 500,000 copies.

Often the best games do not sell anywhere near as well as the mediocre games. Like Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, World at War, and Halo. Mediocrity, but with good presentation and marketing.
