Xbox Live Summer Update Released

by Alice O'Connor, Aug 11, 2009 3:30am PDT

Microsoft's hefty new Xbox Live dashboard update has begun rolling out in waves, bringing a whole host of updates, improvements and new features to the Xbox 360.

An assortment of titles can now be bought from 'Games on Demand' at so-so prices, the Avatar Marketplace will be selling avatar clothing and props from August 13, and Netflix picks up improvements including watching with friends in 'Party Watch' mode.

Snazzy threads in the Avatar Marketplace, and Games on Demand.

The full list of changes details a smattering of smaller improvements such as ratings on all Marketplace items, various ways to sort the friends list, and achievement tracking.

The update will spread across the globe over the next few hours. Once it's available in their region, Live users will be prompted to download it when they next sign in.

  • Perhaps minor, but I was pleased to notice the changelist point out that new games to the Games on Demand service will be released every Tuesday. I'm glad it doesn't have the seemingly arbitrary release schedule of the Xbox Originals program. Setting aside a day of the week for updates--Wii stuff on Monday, XBLA on Wednesday, PSN on Thursday--gives gamers something to look forward to. I'd probably buy more Xbox Original games but I never know when they're going to be released, so I never bother looking in that section of the Marketplace.
