Report: Halo 2 Blamed for Xbox Live 100 Friend Limit

While Microsoft has been reluctant to pin down the reason for why Xbox Live still limits users to a list of 100 friends, a new report places the blame squarely on maintaining support for Halo 2.

One "high-level Microsoft source" told G4TV that Microsoft would have ended support for older Xbox Live games if not for Halo 2's continuing popularity.

According to the source, Microsoft is unable to patch in support for larger friends lists to the older titles, meaning that an expansion of the lists would require the complete shutdown of Halo 2 multiplayer service.

The company is still undecided on when to pull the plug, says the source. Microsoft has publicly expressed a desire to expand the list in recent months, but has not committed to a time frame.

Why not just offer an account upgrade that you can just choose to opt-in for, thus disabling the ability to play Halo 2 w/ that account and getting 100+ users.

From a retail perspective, I my Dawn of War 2 gameplay is restricted by a last gen game. This is bullshit.

My guess? They'll probably end up re-releasing Halo 2 (and maybe Halo 1?) for the 360 with some updated connectivity options and perhaps graphic quality in order to do this.

Wishful thinking? I hope not. I'd love to play Halo 1 blood gulch vehicle ctf on xbox live. Though, I bet Bungie would gimp my wishes anyhow and still not let me play a vehicle ctf only mode (In halo 2 and 3 they don't let you filter for specifically enough for what kind of gameplay or map you want to play. huge pet peeve of mine).

I think it's pathetic they can't patch in support for Halo 2, if true. They have to be able to, but probably are unwilling to spend the money to do so.

Hell-- I could care less about the limit--- I just wish they'd let me make note about users and sort them into groups in my friends list. After the first couple dozen people I lose track of where I know a specific gamer tag from.

Simple Solution:
Put Halo 3 as a downloadable 360 title.
Offer a discount to those who have played halo 3 on their account (say 20-50%)
End Support.

Of course unless this is an original xbox problem.
