Evening Reading
by Nick Breckon, Aug 06, 2009 5:10pm PDTSuppose I'll check out the Arkham Asylum demo tonight. Not sure what to expect. The last Batman game I played was the SNES Konami thing--the one based on the Animated Series. I remember that being pretty rad. Then again, I remember almost every SNES game being rad, so who knows if it actually was.

Looking for some WWII movies that depict Nazi occupation life and resistance fighters during the war, or infiltrators etc, mainly urban sort of stuff, like a spy thriller but in WWII if you take my meaning.
Already got army of shadows, but that movie is so damn tense and claustrophobic, would rather something with a bit more of the usual WWII swashbuckling.

I was googling for some hot chick I just found and opened about 7 random tabs (as I do) with middle click - next thing you know my fucking steam stars opening ??
I cancel it, steam starts opening again.
Cancel it again - you guessed it.
I'm running AVG, I see that's fucking worthless, I killed every task running, re-opened FFox and closed all unknown tabs, what the fuck? FFox 3.5.2 btw.
Anyone seen this before? I just changed my Steam password - jesus christ.

Watched In Bruges two days ago, Thanks for the recommendation shack! Almost a fantastic movie that was knocked down to very good because the pacing broke down some at the end. So something along the lines of that level of awesomeness would be cool. And yes I've seen a shit ton of movies so something off the wall that the shack doesn't rave about constantly would be awesome.

I'm moving to Frankfurt, Germany shortly and I'm wondering if there is a type of apartment or district where I can play music (I'm a musician). Here in LA we have loft apartments or places with garages that work well. Anything like that in Frankfurt?

I've been agonizing over what notebook I should get these last few days....
Budget: about $1000-$1200
Usage: websurfing/email, programming, Doesn't need to be a graphics powerhouse, but need to handle the occasional light gaming(mostly older games, say Warcraft3, but nothing like Crysis)
Need it to be light-weight, nothing over 4.5 lb, quiet... and hopefully doesn't generate much heat.
OS wise, mainly a Windows user, but wouldn't mind switching to OSX
Look-wise, would prefer a more business-like style. Love the MBP unibody design, but the Thinkpad line is cool too.
I've come to either Lenovo T400 14", or a MBP 13"... any other suggestion would be appreciated.

After playing the Batman demo I went back to the dashboard and noticed that the colours were screwed up, like it looked as if it was running in 256k mode, with purple rings of colours. I turned my xbox off and then turned it back on and then my TV couldn't find the input source for the Xbox, so I turned everything off at the mains.
Turn it all back on and everything looks fine, so I start playing Bad Company and during the game the colour goes all weird again with sort of purple rings of colour and its like that when I go back into the dashboard. whats going on? :(

The guy that wrote this stored proc is on vacation for another 2 weeks. I don't know what the fuck, aka I really can't do more that a nested query. But the 3 inputs are supposed to accept cursors(is that the right word?) not a single VARCHAR2 value for each filter input.

Nothing better than playing it after a shite day. The exploding never gets old.
The plan is to play some multiplayer this weekend.
If you haven't tried it yet - what are you waiting for?

For me it was Oblivion.
To the endless previews I read to the games countdown videos before it was released, such as this 30 second one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUfRy1l1bcw&fmt=18
Starting out in the game, you'd be low on skills and possessions, so the outside world was pretty daunting. I'd start off swimming around in lakes, annoying mudcrabs or perhaps stalk some deer outside of the Imperial City.
There was just so much to do and see that it kinda blew my mind at the time. Finally I could do whatever I wanted in an epic and open landscape. I could go off to help people out, take on quests and discover lands....or I could just walk up the nearest hill in the morning to overlook the sun rising up through the trees.
The game just felt alive and that it didn't just revolve around you. You had all the potential to be the greatest man that ever lived.....or you could just go off to pick plants in the wilderness.
I loved that choice. I love all games where you can decide whether you'd like to join the thick of the battle or to just stand back for a breather.
Possibly one of the most engrossing things about the game was the soundtrack. Its easily my favourite of any game. I mean you'd be walking around after killing a group of bandits, maybe healing yourself up then and you'd stumble upon a waterfall you'd never seen before. Then this song would come on and you'd feel you were right there:

Also, the more I played the game, the more I thought to myself how great it would've been to have lived in this place. Life seemed so simple in Oblivion. I must've put in over 200-300 hours into this game because I'd savour every little thing.
Plus, the mods I'd installed just took it to another level of awesomeness.
Forgive my nostalgia :)
