X-Wing, TIE Fighter Revivals Teased by LucasArts Prez
by Nick Breckon, Aug 04, 2009 11:50am PDTIf you could measure the weight of a mysterious tease in dots, one dot representing no possibility and five representing metaphysical certitude, LucasArts president Darrel Rodriguez may have just confirmed an upcoming X-Wing/TIE Fighter-related release.

Ahhh, X-Wing.....When asked in a recent G4TV exchange whether the classic flight sim series might reappear, Rodriguez's keys got rather sticky.
"We don't have any announcements now, but stay tuned," he wrote in an email. "We will soon....."
Steam re-releases of the titles would seem likely given the company's recent dedication to the platform. A more ambitious project along the lines of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition would seem less likely, but far more exciting.

I'd freak out over even the original games released with updated art and supporting high resolutions, and I'd buy the shit out of them.
I'd be shitting my pants over either a remake OR a completely new game that added some cooperative multiplayer so I could have human friends as wingmen instead of AI.

Would be great to play it again, although a part of me knows nostalgia never quite tastes the same second time around.

Also, lets hope they include the following revolutionary gameplay featuers:
[x] regenerative health
[x] third person only
[x] simplified controls: forward, left, right, fire lazers, fire heat seekers (shit only 2 buttons plus the thumb pad!)
[x] a simple dashboard - radar only : green means friendly, red means enemy
[x] nothing complicated like shields, energy balance system, counter measures, those confuse me!
[x] add some sort of cover system, like maybe have your fighter able to 'crouch' behind an astroid with a press of a button, uh oh that might increase the number of buttons from 2 to 3, would that be too complicated?
[x] 6 hours of single player and two multiplayer deathmatch/team deathmatch modes that never gets updated
[x] ABSOLUTELY NO JOYSTICK SUPPORT

Where Are They?
Tell us NOW!
They've been remodeling and reworking models in the game for years.

I guess now that Sturmovik is seeing a serious multiplatform release, a similar treatment of TIE Fighter doesn't sound that crazy. Here's hoping.

My flightstick just got HARD.
Seriously though. I've been waiting for this game to either sequal or remake for.... well, a really long damn time.
X and Tie were both the best games that Lucas Arts ever did... and they did quite a few good ones.

A re-release, for the purposes of nostalgia, would be great. And I would buy them and play them. But much more than that, what the community has been screaming for (for years and years and years now), is an updated game with current graphics and sound, and new story. Multiplayer highly encouraged.
A re-release would be fun, but in the end the community would still be screaming for a new game.

I will purchase any future X-wing/TIE-Fighter title you release for every platform you release it for from now till forever.
Love,
Jeff

I loved it too, I just hope it doesn't make me cringe from 'ancient video game syndrome' where old games are better to be left in my memory, then played again.

I've been dying for a new TIE-Fighter game for YEARS. It's one of the best games of all time IMHO. If they really ARE making a new TIE-Fighter my head might just explode from excitement!! 8D

The X-Wing/Tie Fighter games remain some of the best uses of the Star Wars license to date along with Dark Forces and KOTOR, they definitely deserve to see an updated release.
