Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Aug 04, 2009 7:00am PDTRather than attempt to wring a pithy anecdote from my own cranial sponge this morning, how about we leave this one to an expert? The following complete short story is from Richard Brautigan's collection Revenge of the Lawn, and is titled 'The Scarlatti Tilt.'
'It's very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play the violin.' That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.
Chatty: Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama
38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012
I currently have Homeworld 2 (2003) with the Complex Mod which I play probably every other week.
Also probably EVE Online (2003) but the game has changed a lot since then.

So I've posted about this before... how I think the an iPod touch would be the perfect computer for my mom. It does everything she would need. That got me thinking how an dock into a multi-touch screen with some built in speakers would be really neat.
Anyhow, since that's not very realistic at this point, I wonder if I could get a multi-touch panel and a low-end computer, and maybe simulate the iphone interface like the devs do...? I'm not sure how well it's simulated though, or if there are even any multi-touch panels on the market that would work with it?
I guess it would still be running an OS in the background, and come with inherent problems, but it just seemed interesting nonetheless. Thoughts?

I have an hour to burn... and I've had this question haunting me since I've been listening to Apocalyptica's take on the Zelda music... and I was wondering what Zelda games you guys like the best
I've played through each one of them... most more than twice... some more than five times and I would have to say Link to the Past for the snes is all around my favorite (gameplay... weapons... dungeons... music... etc) though Ocarina of Time is definitely up there along with Link's Awakening for the gameboy (mmm old school zelda)
Honorable mentions: for originality with the dungeons and puzzles: Phantom Hourglass for the ds (I loved how it integrated all the ds's capabilities) originality in music: Minish Cap for the gba (very different music style from the others... and it was delicious) and of course there has to be a bottom of the barrel: Zelda II (what a disappointment... what the hell were they thinking?)
Just curious what you guys think of my ranking... as well as your own

The GameFly Overlords want to give you a chance to kick back with some of your fellow Shackers at QuakeCon this year, and we'd like to know how many of you might be interested in attending a GameFly sponsored Shackmeet on Friday, August 14.
We're considering taking a group to see a movie, or possibly going to the local GameWorks for some food, drinks, and arcade games. We also have a limited supply of commemorative QuakeCon 2009 edition Shacknews t-shirts to give away.
If you don't yet have plans that Friday evening and are interested, please let us know here, or respond to the Shackmeet linked below. If we get enough of a group together, we'll have a party.

I'm torn between two options. The first is a quote from The Dark Tower: "Go then, there are other worlds than these." The fugue that I'm in from my constant nightmares and dreams and insomnia blur things. I remember all my dreams, I constantly experience deja vu and thus I don't believe that this is all the world is. I can't believe that, not after what I've seen and experienced.
The second is Willams Carlos Williams's "This is Just to Say" http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15535
It was the first piece of writing that actually meant something to me, something more than just words on a page. I saw meaning in its tone and the very language of it and I saw beauty in the simplicity. I don't know where I'd put it though. And it might be expensive...

I think we should go on strike.
I'm tired of being taken for granted! Does my time not have value? It is one thing at my job to be treated that way I get paid for that, but when my friends and family expect me to hop too and make their whatever it is gizmo of the week work and not even offer a thank you it makes it really hard to want to fix it next time.
Whats worse is when they do offer some kind of payment it is a bullshit token gesture. No! I don't want your leftovers as payment, you just got $200 - $500 worth of computer repair for fucking free. I set up your brand new 50 inch plasma tv and surround sound system, connect your 360 to your home network, and set up your wireless access point trouble shooting every little thing that pops up 3 hours of work and all you want to pay me is $20 bucks. Are you fucking crazy? I know I make it seem easy and it is but all that shit takes time time I could be doing some thing I want to do instead of spending my weekends cleaning out your dusty shitty computer cause you want me to install more memory cause you are to cheap to buy a computer capable of running the application you want. I don't want to give up my evening to salvage the hard drive from the laptop that your stupid asshole cat pissed on, I told you not to leave it where the cats can get to it. Did you listen? Nope you didn't. Now I have to bust my ass to get your data in a readable format cause you have an important file you need for a meeting tomorrow. Oh and what do I get out of the whole deal? "You can have the laptop if you want it, I'm sure you could get it going" WHAT? why would I want a computer that is 10 years old and smells like cat piss?
Next time one of your friends, your mother, your father, brother or sister asks you to help them with their technological problems tell them you are on strike tell them they can fix it them self.
