Morning Discussion

The worst part about Monday is not that you're four days from the merriment of Friday, rather than you're six from the wonders of a Sunday roast. The Yorkshire puddings you had supped upon grow puffier and puffier in the mind until they become clouds, lost to the grim Monday wind. I'll remember you, Yorkshire puddings. Your sweet memory will carry me through this week until we can be reunited again. I think I love you. Stay strong.

I was playing Red Faction: Guerrilla this weekend (it's awesome, btw) and it occurred to me: has there ever been a video game where you play a firefighter? This could be awesome in the RF:G engine.

      Yes.

      Burning Rangers on Saturn.

Pure awesome shoved onto a game disc.

Never heard of this one. Considering the accessibility of this idea and how common the dream of "i wanna be a fireman" is among little kids, I am very surprised there aren't a lot more firefighting games.

There's been several for PS2, one for Wii, a Konami huge arcade one with prop hoses to point at the widescreen.

Why would it be awesome in the GeoMod engine? Would the buildings crumble under the pressure of the water from the firehose? Doesn't sound like a very good firefighter.

In Geomod, you could do this...

fire destroys buildings. collapse is a serious danger. and you could smash your way through them to rescue people.

You know how people talk about thinking about jacking cars and smashing cops after playing too much GTA?

              Yeah...

That's now happening to me, but in a more RF:G sort of way.

I'm totally going to end up in jail.

I'm getting mad at it. I'm in the Badlands and Oasis and absolutely getting my ass kicked.

At this point I've resorted to salvaging to get my weapons upgraded, but the EDF is stomping on me. :(

Up until Oasis you're extremely vulnerable. You need to act like a guerrilla -- stealth, hit and run tactics, and building morale to create a fighting force. Do not engage the EDF directly -- hit a target quickly, powerfully, and then run away.

The most important thing seems to be making sure you've got the right equipment for the job. Going to blow up a few buildings? Load up on explosives. Going to harass the EDF/stomp a convoy? Make sure you have the arc welder so you can jack a few of their vehicles asap.

Things get a lot easier once you have a certain weapon fully upgraded, but until then you're entirely too weak to confront the EDF directly.

apparently it can kill the guys inside a vehicle. that's useful.

              August 3, 2009 11:33 AM

              It's always useful.

The Arc Welder kills people inside of vehicles w/o harming the vehicle. This is extremely useful when hijacking a convoy, or (better yet) when hijacking a tank. Jacking a tank and using it against the EDF makes a lot of missions dirt simple.

I could've sworn it tells you that in the description of the weapon. If not in the purchase page, then in the in-game handbook entry.

Chasing a fleeing tank all over the place trying to shoot it with the arc welder while he tries to shoot you with the cannon is pretty funny. :)

It also locks onto people and keeps them from shooting you, which is useful at times.

Coupled with the "doesn't hit friendlies" perk, it's insanely useful.

Eventually I got to the point where I was fighting too many enemies at once for it to be useful aside from stealing vehicles, but it was great before that.
