Gears of War 2 Free Xbox Live Weekend Begins

30
Microsoft today kicked off a free weekend of Gears of War 2 multiplayer, allowing those poor Xbox Live Silver members a chance to get online and play some Gears 2 multiplayer.

The event runs from today through August 3 at 11:59am EST (8:59am PST).

Am I the only one appalled by the fact that I can't play half of the game that I paid for without having to purchase a monthly subscription? I just finished up the Gears 2 campaign and was hoping to jump online and play some Horde only to find out I can't without a Gold membership. Are there any games you can play online without a gold membership or is it normally the case that you're screwed out of that part of the game?

It is pretty annoying. You can usually find sales on the cards for around $30 USD for 13 months. Sucks that you have to pay for it, but the experience is totally worth it to me. Plus things like 1 vs. 100 are pretty fun.

It's unfortunate that none of the Live competitors have offered a free service that comes close to matching it. It really has no competition, and so the value remains.

Honestly, even if you pay the $50, it's not a bad price at all for what you get. Usually you can get a sale for like $30. Worth a shot :)

How is the PC NOT comparable to consoles? Because its superior? Because all you pay for is your internet connection, and not for the RIGHT to host servers on Microsoft's so-called Xbox Experience? Is it because the Xbox is basically a 3 and a half year old PC with a 3 year old video card put into a small case that could catch the RROD if you just look at it funny?

You're right, it's a lot better on PC.

The PS3 online integration is very poor. It lacks many features and has no standards across games.

You're screwed. The fairest thing MS could do is to offer a vanilla online multiplayer component for free, the second fairest thing to do would be to delay multiplayer for silver XBL members for 6 months then free for all afterwards. That way gold members get their value and bragging rights while silver members finally get the full value of the game they paid for.

Don't you get a free month of Gold when you make an account? If you don't care at all about your achievements, you could probably make a second account, get the free month of Gold, and at least see whether or not you like Gears of War 2 multiplayer before paying for Gold.

it is a shame. they're using your internet service, your bandwidth... what are they paying for again? oh those ads they serve up to you? cool.

Hasn't this been known for years? I don't think it's a huge financial outlay, especially if you are playing lots of games online. From what I've seen (as a pc gamer) they make updates and fixes often. I have no clue how reliable the service is or how laggy most games are but it's not new news.

The free weekends has got to be a change in policy though? MS looking at steam, beats me why they don't use steam to distribute their games on PC though...
