Free-to-play Dungeons & Dragons MMO Delayed
by Alice O'Connor, Jul 31, 2009 11:00am PDTTurbine's free-to-play relaunch of its MMO Dungeons & Dragons Online, subtitled 'Eberron Unlimited,' has been delayed until September 9, the studio announced today.
"We are committed to delivering a high-quality experience, said DDO executive producer Fernando Paiz. "We feel that more time is needed to deliver on this commitment."
Originally scheduled to arrive on August 4, Eberron Unlimited will make the fantasy MMO free to play, raise the level cap, introduce a new class, and add gobs of new content.
Eberron Unlimited will be supported by optional micropayments for items, services and content, as well as 'VIP' subscriptions with access to all premium content.

The way they are going about the free-to-play seems a bit broken though. around 3/4 of the quests are free but there's no easy way to instantly tell if a quest an ncp has for you is free or for pay. The entry points for pay quests are marked on the map with a different icon but if the ncp that gives the quest isn't near the entrance to it, there's no way that I can find to tell if they are giving you a free or a pay quest. The ncp's with pay quests have the same icon over their head as the free quest ncp's.
I've never played WoW but I've played LotR and City of Heroes. I like City of Heroes better than D&D online but one of them is free and the other isn't so I'll probably keep playing D&DO after the beta ends.
