              Gmail currently works based off the fetch settings. Defaults to 30m I think, can be set to 15m, 30m, 1h, and manual.
              
              Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Fetch New Data > Advanced
              
              You can see which accounts are functioning which ways in there.
