Is this just RE4 themed or a is it pretty much the basic RE4 game with many compromises of course for the iphone?

Its 12 SP levels and 24 Mercenaries levels. The SP levels are based on the major set pieces from the original game like the village at the beginning and the scene where you are holed up in the house and fighting off waves of enemies. There isn't any exploration in between, the levels are bite sized and contain lots of ammo, items and cash to collect. The weapons can all be upgraded just like the original, but cost more because you can play Mercenaries at the same time, with the cash earned you can upgrade your weapons and buy items for the SP levels. The story is delivered between levels in a simple text and image fashion, it really isn't that well done.

The controls are a lot better than RE Degeneration for the iTouch/Phone, as Leon moves a lot quicker, the 180 turn works easily, and aiming is quicker and less sensitive. The graphics are nice, but the textures are really muddy when close up. The game retains the same tension as RE4, I was very freaked out when surrounded by enemies and it feels just like RE4 did. Its a pretty good attempt, although it was originally a mobile game that came out over a year ago only in Japan, so it would be nice to see what can be done from the ground up for the device.

Also, the Mercenaries levels have specific goals like using a shotgun only, getting Ashley to the exit without damage, and other ones, so its varied and fun. Ashley is also in the SP levels and you can control her like before to stop, wait, etc. They retained a lot of RE4's mechanics, the levels are just a lot smaller.

There are no compromises really, thats part of why it sucks. Its RE4 as it was on the Gamecube, including using the same controls, which don't work very well on a touchscreen.

Still pretty impressive graphics for a phone though. Definitely proves the iPhone 3G S will be able to do anything a PSP can do.

No, it doesn't. There's no way in hell I'd prefer games like this on the iphone compared to the psp.
