What is it you personally enjoy about competitive multiplayer games? What is it that makes the experience fun for you?
Everyone will say they "play to have fun" ... but it seems that our definitions of what is fun are drastically different.
For me, fun comes from improving. Getting better than I was, playing well, and eventually winning. Yes, winning. That is the ultimate objective though I would say that the road to get there is as much if not more fun than the actual act. The most fun I've ever had in any multiplayer game is actually when I'm consistently losing to someone much better than me but where I'm improving at an alarming rate.
I could probably type a bloody novel explaining (and I may just later, it's been bugging me lately), but for now I am very interested to see what other shackers feel on the topic.
So, what say you shack?

Also, Matthew McConaughey wins the award for worst subplot in a movie ever. It's like some Hollywood Agent lobbying group managed to push his character into the script. Putrid.

I was thinking about this earlier. How even as far back as games like Quake, I would play on the same servers most of the time along with a bunch of other regulars and we'd get to know one another as we played. We'd even spectate and shoot the shit when we got tired of playing for the day. It was like a local bar but the drink was video games. Okay, maybe not that corny but even today anyone here can hop on Shackwest TF2 Tuesdays and have a good time with a large group of shackers. Just post the time and IP and people will show up and have a good time. Whatever the game was, as long as someone had a server people would be there.
Console shooters like CoD4 and Halo3 don't really have that sense of community outside of your tight knit group of friends and then acquaintances on your friends list. Except the first few weeks when the game is still extremely popular, most of the time it's just you and your buddies getting matched up with random people you can't exactly converse with in detail (no text chat or all talk with the other team during the gameplay) so you never get to know who you are playing against as well. Once the game is over you probably won't even see them again unless you add them to your list because of the peer-to-peer randomness or dedicated server matchmaking like BF1943.
I also noticed this thread Xevo made earlier ( http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=20511649#itemanchor_20511649 ) about getting a private shack game going in 1943 on the 360, and it seemed so counter-intuitive to the way PC multiplayer games are set up. Especially now with services like Steam where you can see what your friends are doing and where they are playing just like Xbox Live, with the benefit of having permanent places and servers to gather and play without needing a friends list or sending individual invites. So even if you don't have all the people you know in a community on your friends list, all you have to do is give the IP out and they'll show up. The only real downside is someone out there has to pony up for the server and bandwidth rather than everyone paying a monthly / yearly fee for peer to peer Xbox Live multiplayer connectivity and publisher/developer run servers only.
I'm not knocking Xbox Live or PSN or whatever comes next at all by the way. Those services are extremely popular are a great way to pickup and play a game for a few minutes or hours with some friends and move on, but they have always seemed to lack the larger community and social aspects online PC games have had since they went online.

"Dear LucasArts. Please remake Full Throttle, The Dig, Day of the Tentacle as you did Monkey Island."
I would speculate, said developer has not played Day of the Tentacle, nor Full Throttle recently as both games with a good Scumm emulator and smoothing still look fantastic.
Timeless art style (think WoW, Disney Cartoons)
The Dig however has dated somewhat.

I'm almost certain that a couple of the lines toward the end were:
"These things that I tell you know,
May not go over well."
Its a song with a quick beat and a really strong, distinctive horn part throughout.
Does anyone happen to know the track I'm thinking of?

Yeah, yeah...pos right? I snagged one for my sons 11th birthday. I gave him my old desktop for games, and this is just for school. Web, e-mail, MS Office. I haven't messed around with it and I'm curious if any Shackers may have picked one up. I'm curious how the general performance is for these applications.
