Morning Discussion: The Devil's Work
by Chris Faylor, Jul 24, 2009 7:21am PDTSo I've been futzing around a bit with the Xbox 360 dashboard update slated to hit on August 11, and I have to say, the new "Achievement Progress" tracker it adds to in the user profile area is just plain old evil, in that "it will break your spirit" kind of way.
See, it provides a breakdown of how many Achievements and Gamerscore Points you have over how many you could have possibly earned. For example, my Gamerscore is currently 14105 out of a possible 78705, as I've earned 819 of 3607 Achievements across all of the Xbox 360 games I've played. Seeing this just makes me feel ...less than.
There's also a figure for "complete" games in which you've earned all possible Achievements. In my case, one, with the icon for Cloning Clyde looking quite lonely. I wouldn't worry about Clyde though--he's been alone there since 2006. He's used to it.

AC130 Gunship!
That is epic. Way better than dogs. The one thing I hated about the attack chopper from the first MW was that it was way too good at aquiring targets. The turret would snap around and nail you as though the gunner had eyes everywhere.

I just watched the new Comic-Con trailer and between the music, the new arty style, the RPG style stuff, item randomization....oh God it needs to come out tomorrow. It seems to have completely switched from being a bland looking shooter back about a year ago to this super stylized fun looking game.

I also decided to ditch my CDJ-800s and go with CDJ-400s: http://djkolysko.smugmug.com/photos/600783942_GwHBB-X2.jpg (I love the built in effects and the fact that I can use them as midi controllers for Ableton or Traktor).

They're on the last day of the FF marathon, raised over $42,000 with their new goal of $50,000. Right now NBC is sitting in their room filiming, and they already had CBS there a few days ago. Ends today at 6pm CST, so enjoy while you can!
Right now they're playing FFXI in a small box on the feed, and FFX in the larger portion of the feed.

* is under $500
* mounts to a wall (I have ethernet and power abt 10' off the ground)
* can be viewed by multiple people w/ just a web browser. I do not want to install software on other machines
it'd be cool to be able to archive video, but not mandatory (software installation for this is ok)

I've had it about a week and I don't regret it yet. They seem to have widened their library since the last time I used it a lot, not quite so much repetitive stuff. High quality audio is good. It's not as good as my personal music collection but it's plenty good for streaming audio.
The only real issue I have so far is that the desktop app isn't very good. It's written with Adobe Air, and as such, doesn't support some basic things that almost all native audio players do, namely media buttons. Can't pause the damn thing using the pause button on my keyboard. Very annoying. Aside from that, it's just a mini version of the full web app.
Overall, though, 3 bucks a month, and supporting a company that's doing some cool stuff... two thumbs up.

I'm coming to your fine city for the majority of the month of November. I will be living out of a suitcase and in trial hell, so it would be awesome if some of you could find it in your hearts to show me around the town.
I know this is mega-early, but sometimes shit is hard to organize and all.

It's not that hard and it's not that long, but it's really, really fun. Graphics are SNES-level and the gameplay and level designs stay decently varied. I wish they'd do a sequel to this thing, but I don't know of many developers that'd be able to really pull it off (maybe A2M as a PSN/XBLA title or Griptonite as a DS title).

The game itself is pretty cool - I just did the first couple missions of the Soviet Campaign (at the railyard now but had to step away). Like that there are many ways to complete it - I dismounted some of my guys off the tank when I had to attack the hill and put them on a Pak-37 to draw the enemy in. Worked pretty good - tank chewed them up as they were going after the gun. Looking forward to doing some co-op tonight with my buddy.
