Morning Discussion: Comic-Con Craziness
by Chris Faylor, Jul 23, 2009 7:05am PDTLooking at my inbox, it's fairly obvious that the San Diego Comic-Con has kicked off. I'm kinda excited to see what comes out of it, but at the same time, I just hope I can keep up with everything from home. There's a lot of panels and announcements to be had there.
But hey, less banter, more news and such. You all have a good one, or at least try to.

I finally got the demo and got my first experience playing last night. The following account of what happened was dictated by pupismyname - he can descripe things so much better than me:
BF is the kind of game that needs an instant replay feature with saving capability. At any moment you should be able to pause the game and click "save a video of the last 30 seconds". I would have saved this:
I had been driving papaboo around in a Jeep for a few minutes on Wake Island, so now it was his turn to drive. papaboo got behind the wheel, I manned the gun, and a third random guy hopped in the passenger seat. I'm sure that guy had no idea what he was about to experience. papaboo took a second to fiddle with the controls, then we got going.
I can't remember if BF1942 was like this, but the flags in BF1943 are demarcated with a colored icon, and these icons are always visible on your screen even if they're really far away or obscured by the landscape. So papaboo is fucking flooring it down the road, and when he gets to a turn, instead of following the road, he just drives straight at the red flag icon. What he doesn't know is that Wake is a horseshoe and there is a cliff, a beach, water, another beach, and another cliff between our position and that flag icon if you take a straight line.
When we crest the top of the hill, papaboo realizes his mistake. I say "GET OUT OF THE JEEP" and bail right at the top, and watch papaboo and this random dude sail off into the distance. The Jeep hits a secondary ridge and papaboo bails gracefully on his feet, and the Jeep goes careening down out of view, spinning like a ballerina. We both run up and find the Jeep peacefully resting on all four wheels on the beach, right at the edge of the water. The third dude gets out, looks around for a second, then takes off for a different flag. papaboo and I are laughing our asses off.
We run down to the Jeep, and I say "I'm driving."
Then we capped the flag.

I'm going to try cooking spaghetti tonight for the first time but I am terrible at cooking any sort of noodle. I've undercooked shells and cheese and over cooked rice many times.
What are some tips to get this right and not have super sticky gross noodles?

I was redeeming points for this Pepsi Rock Band promotion, and I accidentally redeemed two points for the same song. Since I have no use for the second code, it's free to a good home.
Here's the catch: ya' gotta appreciate classic rock from the 1970s, because the song is" Hitch A Ride" by Boston, "Hitch A Ride":

If you're interested, SM me and I'll send you the code which you can redeem at the MS Marketplace (either at xbox.com or through your console).

We just released a new beta channel version, the first 3.x build to make it to beta. Some good stuff (speedups, bugfixes, new omnibox dropdown graphics, preliminary <video> support) is in this build; other stuff (extensions, themes, new New Tab Page) is coming in a later beta release.
We've been working hard on three things: Mac, Linux, and Extensions. All three of these have been progressing really fast and I personally hope to see all of them in a 3.x series release to the stable channel as soon as we can get them there. Not sure how soon that will be but the fact that we've finally pushed a build to Beta is a good sign.
Firefox mockups taking visual cues from Chrome was interesting. I like the mocks overall, although a lot of details are way too fiddly for me. It surprises me that what I think is the _least_ compelling part of the Chrome UI, the "Page/Tools" pair of menus, is the thing that first Safari and now Firefox have decided to adopt. Tabs on top is more interesting; I wonder if Steve Jobs got back to Apple, saw the Safari 4 beta, and threw a tantrum about them. A combined search and address bar is my favorite UI bit (of course I'm biased), and no one seems to be moving to adopt that, which surprises me, as I think once you get used to it it's an extremely sticky feature.
I think Chrome is less compelling, compared to the current alternatives, than Chrome 1 was, compared to the then-available alternatives. This is my way of saying that Firefox 3.5, Safari 4, and IE 8 all made noticeable improvements that blunted the lead of Chrome in areas like speed or UI cognitive overhead. That's a really good thing. I'd love for tons of people to use my product (and more are every day), but if web users in general are getting better browsers, that's ultimately even more important. I still think that Chrome, especially with extension support, is my favorite browser (it wasn't for a long time during its development!), and I think competition from us has pushed more improvements to other browsers faster, but I am happy with how the market is moving in general.
A big future focus for the team is HTML5 and the web platform in general. On the tail of <video>/<audio> support are all sorts of other things, like Web Workers, Database, App Cache, as well as features that are not yet W3C/WHATWG standards, like Native Client, O3D, and a whole slew of other proposals (e.g. the geolocation capabilities Firefox 3.5 and we are supporting). The other half of this coin is much-improved development tools; the 3.x build series has (and will continue to have) big improvements in the built-in dev tools, and our hope is to eventually surpass Firebug in usefulness. Two reasons the web sucks as a platform for doing anything are bad tools and bad capabilities, so we're trying to build up both.

We've come a long way to get here. The contest ends tomorrow night at midnight. JesseB is proving to be a worthy adversary but I still think we can beat him. He's managed to get quite a few votes today and he's moved into first place. It's really down to the wire now, and I need your votes more than ever! Let's do this!
