Morning Discussion: 'Splosion Wednesday!
by Chris Faylor, Jul 22, 2009 6:00am PDTI still remember the first time we heard about 'Splosion Man. It was April 1, and there were so many other joke announcements, we thought that was one of them. But no, it turned out that the story of a man who explodes his enemies into "chunks of ham and ribeyes" was real, as evidenced by its current availability on Xbox Live Arcade.
I had meant to get up early and play for a bit to provide a more comprehensive overview, but, you know how getting up early is sometimes. And hey, there's a free demo!

I wish it was the shape of a G5 though. Logitech have released a G5 grip for the G9 so maybe I'll order that. The skinny grip isn't that bad though and I'm sure I'll get use to it.
Reading around I guess I was lucky and have a mouse pad that works with the G9( blue 1030). They released a new version of the G9, called the G9X, that is suppose to work with more diverse set of mouse pads.
Also should my G9's feet been warn down a bit? Seems like Bestbuy sent me a returned or display model. The bottom of the mouse was a little bit dirty too. I guess you should video tape whenever you open something :(

I'm burned out on WW2 FPS, so World at War isn't for me
I played the demo of Fear 2 and there were a lot of things I didn't like. I loved the first part though.
Stalker: Clear Sky looks good, but does it hold up if your main goal is to just shoot stuff? How does it compare to the first Stalker?
Any other FPS games I missed? I really haven't been keeping up with what's out there.

With the news of cheaper SSDs on the way from Intel, I'm back to shopping around hardware. I'm all but decided on an Antec P183 for my case, which leads me to the question:
Would I be an idiot for getting one of Antec's proprietary, CP Series power supplies?

It really reminded me how much better model effects can be for a lot of things. Models' death as everyone rushes to drown movies in unecessary and boring CGI is very sad.

Is City life worth purchasing? Is there another Simcity esque game you would recommend? Maybe Anno 1404?

Now apparently this is a "new (to me)" style of music called Dubstep?
I tried searching around and found a few other songs I like, but nothing quite as bad ass as the one linked. Any shackers familiar with this style and have any reccomendations on what to listen to for a good base (and to decide if I like the style or just that one song)?

I'll stop the daily updates and post every so often from here on.
Those those interested, I have not had a single urge to smoke and have work nicely with Snus from this point. No problems sleeping and I'm starting to get my sense of smell back!
No lip soreness or anything like that. My plan is to continue with this for a few months then start backing away using lozenges to meter my nicotine intake, tapering off super slowly.

Today I was at a Goodwill trying to find a coat I can use/dispose of for a costume, and I came across a mint condition copy of Police Quest and King's Quest V for $5 a piece! I'm heading back on the next half-off day to pick up a few others I came across (including Space Ace!).
Success!

People complain so fucking much in this game. No one can just sit back and enjoy a game without whining about the rules or the people.

Navigon North America has finally been released. Limited time price of $69, which is pretty good compared to the Europe version which is $139. They also have a free version out that doesn't offer real-time navigation, but lets you try out the software. This is "offline" based navigation software, so it doesn't require an active internet connection on your iPhone to use it. That means it takes up 1.29GB as a result, but you'll never lose your maps just because your phone service sucks.
Just thought some people might be interested in this, it is better than what the TomTom software will offer from what I can see. Going to test out the free version now to see if it's any good.

re: last night's thread http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=20472910#itemanchor_20472910
Home version now available: http://troz.shackspace.com/ShackGraph/ShackGraph.jar
requires Java 1.5+ (I've only tested with 1.6), and runs off of the shackchatty api
Directions: Download the .JAR file, and you should just be able to double click it to run it if Java is installed correctly.
Either pick a recent story (#comments, title, date), or enter a story id, and press 'Display Story'.
Then WAIT - about 20-30 seconds - up to a minute for chattys - every thread is requested individually. Chattys are almost unusably slow!!!
Anyway, +/- zooms. The next combobox switches from dragging the whole graph around, to only moving single nodes (p / t keys should also switch the mouse mode). In picking mode, the selected node is Cyan, and neighbor nodes are colored depending on if they have in, out or in and out edges.
The Animate button basically turns on constant layout, causing some to animate (the last few layout types don't animate), it also animates layout transitions. The next combobox lets you choose the layout. The save button will save the current image and the graph data in two different formats into the directory from which you ran the program.

Visceral execs defect to Activision:
http://au.gamespot.com/news/6213771.html
Visceral is one of the bright spots at EA (Dead Space, Dante's Inferno) and Activision is doing everything they can with Blizzard's money to fuck it up. Let me list the ways Activision has assumed the role of most evil game publisher on the planet:
1. Buy out Blizzard
2. Beat the Guitar Hero franchise to death
3. Get rid of promising titles like Brutal Legend than can't be "exploited" on an annual basis
4. Then when Brutal Legend looks like it's going to do well, throw a baby tantrum and sue the developer and new publisher of the game
5. Instead of growing your own talent at developing new IP internally, raid Blizzard's huge bank vault to bribe people away from your main adversary
6. Carry a pitchfork around and wear horns on your head, and constantly think about more ways to be evil douchebags

I have a lot of unplayed titles, and even more unfinished ones. Once I invest about two hours or more into a game, I generally can finish it out. It's the initial investment that often scares me off. I find myself going back to old familiar titles that I know, rather than learn some new gameplay system. I don't like this! I know it's age and less free time creeping up, but I don't want to be the old gamer who plays two games from 2002 forever.
I also tolerate far less from a game's introductory period. If I become frustrated for more than, say, ten minutes, I will shut off the game. *If* I return to it again, and it frustrates me more, I generally will be done with it (Dead Rising in particular did this). I suppose in a way it's good, but then you have this philosophy floating around that any user frustration is the fault of the user not understanding something or not "learning" the game. I feel that's unfair. I play games for fun, not to overcome a massive obstacle.
How much bullshit are you guys willing to tolerate from a game, especially in its first few hours?
