Star Wars: The Old Republic Voice Acting Doc Reveals Darth Maul's Welsh Heritage
by Nick Breckon, Jul 17, 2009 4:53pm PDTThe latest dev diary for BioWare's MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic describes the challenges and payoffs of fully voicing all of the game's in-game NPC characters.
Such a massive undertaking requires plenty of voice actors, a dozen dialogue writers, and special voice directors, which hilariously must combine real-world dramatic guidance with the Star Wars lexicon.

hope they can do better than that, there's plenty enough of the status quo crap out there already.

It slows things down for the players who just want to get to the next thing.
Worse though, it makes development slower as typing up some quest text is easy. Scheduling people to come in do the dialogue and then getting it cut and in the database and then back in the game on the proper in NPC is SLOW
and if you use union people for voice you can't just grab the cleaning lady to do a voice real quick. So content generation will take longer, and patches that bring more quests and things will take much longer to make and be more expensive. This may lead to much less content than its competitor, WoW

Has he ever seen Star Wars? Because I feel like most of us are in this for laser swords and space ships that can blow up planets.

As it seems, much of the game takes place completely separate from other players, which begs the question, "Why am I paying $15 a month?"

Now I think most people's first response will be "this probably won't 'beat' Warcraft" but tell me truely; do you want to play this game with WoW-like players?

wont players get restless being forced to go through all these cutscenes?
they cant be any better than saturday morning cartoon shlock.
MMOs arent about listening to NPCs talk about their feelings. mmos are about players messing with each other and killing/appeasing NPCs.
these glorified dialogue boxes are either going to succeed mildly or fail wholly because of wasting people's time (at least those who want to move along to the next thing)
Also those graphics are pretty weak overall even compared to some other MMOs recently. Come on, this is a PC-exclusive game made in two-thousand-freaking-nine. Let's not forget that powerful GPUs are insanely cheap now.

"Maximum firepower!"
