MMO division Sony Online Entertainment today confirmed that it has laid off 41 employees, amounting to 5% of its full-time workforce.

In a statement, Sony explained the move as a means to "increase operational efficiency and reduce costs."

"SOE looks forward to continuing its leadership role in the online games industry as it celebrates the highly successful launch of Free Realms, the 10-year commemoration of its ground-breaking EverQuest franchise, and the continued performance of the company's other games," said the company.

I'm surprised it wasn't more...and that they didn't do this a year or two ago.

this kind of small reduction in workforce is usually just a routine culling of dead weight more than a layoff. any company or division of a certain size will tend to wind up with around 5% of cruft. cleaning it out periodically is a good way to improve the overall performance of the company/division, as well as saving some money. that 5% of bottom-feeders can really drag a company or division down, and is low-hanging fruit when it comes to profitability...
