Braid Creator Making 3D 'Puzzle-Exploration Game'
by Alice O'Connor, Jul 17, 2009 9:36am PDTJonathan Blow, designer of acclaimed puzzle-platformer Braid, has revealed through job postings that he's entering development of a new 3D "puzzle-exploration game."
Blow describes the project as "a puzzle-exploration game that is philosophical, and quiet, and is being made for reasons other than crass profit motive." Bless his socks.
While there are few details on what the new game will be, Blow's job posting for a 3D environment concept artist gives a fair indication of what won't be involved:
The majority of [your] portfolio should consist of things absent from the following list: Girls With Big Tits; Barbarians Wielding Axes, Covered in Blood; Aliens; Space Ships; Gangsters Getting Shot in the Face; Orcs; Giant Robots; and, of course, Postapocalyptic Wastelands.
Kinect for Xbox One coming to PC
Xbox One does not provide any built-in DVR capabilities
Xbox One increases friends lists to 1,000
Xbox One achievements dynamic, not limited to single games

I don't think he comes off as a douche by saying what he said - what he wants is someone that has proven that he/she is able to think beyond the traditional perimeters of modern day gaming. Braid was IMO a fantastic game not creatable from a traditional mindset - hence you need to prove that you are able to work outside it.
I doubt that experience from traditional gaming design is a disqualifying, rather just that it won't count for much when he makes his decision.

As to why someone would care how this guy acts if his game is good? Well, how about, I don't generally like giving my money to a$$holes... There's plenty of other great games out there these days, so much so, that I have numerous games I've purchased on my steam list I've never so much as played for one minute (bought them on weekend sales).
While Braid may be a fantastic, innovative puzzle/platformer....it's still a $15 downloadable 2d game, with an art style I don't personally like (not saying it's bad at all, just saying it's not my taste) and it's a very short game. While I may be missing out...in the end I'd much rather spend my money elsewhere given this guy's attitude.
Hell, I've been reading this site for something like 10 years, and I almost never post a comment, but seeing people defend this guy while not understanding why he gets flamed...just amazes me.

Judging the game by itself regardless of the creator (because, let's face it, game designers are generally weird motherfuckers), I thought it was a fun game. Having to come up with solutions in another dimension reminded me of Portal at times and I liked the art style which reminded me of Perry Bible Fellowship's art.
This guy just seems like he's frustrated at the me-too, catering to the LCD, money-grab schlock that the industry constantly pumps out. Braid was good enough (for me) and successful enough that he can be in a position to talk shit all he likes. No more free rides if his next game sucks though.
Honestly, I never really sympathised with the JOHN BLOW IS A PRETENTIOUS JACKASS reputation he seems to have, but that's just silly. Who cares? Why even say this? What a pretentious jackass.
Pretty sure that job listing his at least partly in jest, though.

Just because an artist has any of that stuff on their portfolio does not mean they can't do other stuff. 90% of the time the artists have absolutely no say as far as what they work on in a game. He comes off like 'oh, well, you are low brow if you have that stuff on your portfolio, i'm obviously better than you'
