Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Jul 17, 2009 5:15am PDTThe weekend is thankfully approaching, giving me plenty of time to kick back and contemplate reports of a ginormous gloopy black glob of supposedly organic mass drifting through the Arctic Ocean, devouring hapless geese. My main points of ponderance are what is that? and how cool is that! If I squint hard enough, I can make out dozens of eyes slowly blinking in and out of form. I want to believe, and so I shall.
Let's be brave, Shacknews. Together we can get through anything.
Any tips? Strategies? Better to attack / defend? Aim for the eyes?

Yesterday I took a look at my friend's 360 version of BF1943 and I was surprised to see how bad-looking the PS3 version is compared to it. I understand that Sony's console is more difficult to program for, but what the fuck?
The PS3 version gets:
- Lower LOD
- Much worse water texture/effects
- Lower resolution textures
- Floating boxes, missing textures/polygons and weird stuff
Example: one thing that sometimes happens on my PS3 is that looking at a plane taking off the wheels suddenly disappear. The alias seems much worse on the PS3 version too.
I love my PS3 (specially as a media center and BD player, heh) but I'm disappointed with the overall gaming aspect of it (not to mention the multiplayer aspect already discussed here).

Now, however, I'm seeing horizontal lines across the display at random times. I can't figure out how to recreate it consistently though. I'm assuming whatever logic board they gave me was refurb and clearly it has its own issues. So I'm pissed.

So I guess I have some modern-ish examples of games that are built on a ‘realism’ that didn’t really try too hard to be real. For example I really like Dangerous Waters. They didn’t try to go for a photorealistic simulation, but they did manage to get the numbers and the feel of the game correct. I also find it more fun than the experience I got playing any of the new Silent Hunter games, though that can probably be blamed on the absence of multiplayer(there just wasn’t a mechanic to allow for multiplayer).
That said I played Aces of the Pacific and Aces over Europe back in the day a ton, I mean all the time, between bouts of Civ 1, but the realism that IL-2 and Combat Flight Simulator provide now would make it very hard for me to go back and play those games.
It seems as though there are a couple of categories where gameplay end up being timeless. Using the Aces example, I have tried to go back and play them, but just didn’t find it very fun having played newer games like IL-2. But I play one or two games of the original Master of Orion a week, work on my X-Com game often, and a few matches in Star Control II’s Super Melee are always fun.
Something I would really like to know is do you guys and gals think that there is a bottom line in acceptable graphics these days, is there a point at which the game just doesn’t look good enough to play? For example if a modern day Master of Orion game came out with the original graphics, but the game had a hugely expanded universe and multiplayer capability, would that be acceptable? Does gameplay trump all? Perhaps is there a different between single and multiplayer games? I feel that there might be a little more of an expectation for single player games to be more realistic, but in a multiplayer game I feel like I’m more willing to concede for better performance or better gameplay.
Lastly what about tradeoffs? What if a new game came out in the original Red Faction engine graphics capabilities, but had a massively expanded ability to handle environment destruction, just as one example? Would something like that be acceptable? Why or why not?

If not, why not? It's a simple game that Robotic Puppy Eater has running on his BBS.
Think of a text based, simpler EVE Online. Get in your ship, trade to make some money, build some planets, kill your enemies, it's good times!

You can use PuTTY to do this, but make sure you go into the PuTTY settings, go to Window -> Translation and change the dropdown box to CP437. This will make things look a lot better.

The good news is Valve has said that they are working on multiple maps geared towards the competitive community, including a new 5-point Push map. I would guess that the new maps are expanded versions of the recent Arena maps, Nucleus and Sawmill. Nucleus has big A and B signs on the walls which would indicate a Gravelpit style map. In the description for Sawmill, Valve talked about an underground spy base which was absent in the Arena version. So I would expect a Push map for that. Should be awesome.
There's also going to be weapon trading and an awesome new system for recording demos.
So besides that, would what you guys like to see in the next major update?

This morning, hundreds of Amazon Kindle owners awoke to discover that books by a certain famous author had mysteriously disappeared from their e-book readers. These were books that they had bought and paid for—thought they owned.
But no, apparently the publisher changed its mind about offering an electronic edition, and apparently Amazon, whose business lives and dies by publisher happiness, caved. It electronically deleted all books by this author from people’s Kindles and credited their accounts for the price.

I mentioned in a recent thread that I had compiled a spreadsheet containing info on all the following:
- Rock Band 1
- Rock Band 2
- All Rock Band DLC up through July 2009
- Guitar Hero 2
- Guitar Hero 3
- Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
- Guitar Hero World Tour
- All DLC for all of the above GH games, up through July 2009
I've included the song title, band, year, master track or cover, full band or guitar only, and (for RB only) the genre. I've also included the Track Pack, for those DLC songs included in such a bundle. In addition, there's a column indicating the RB downloadable tracks which are available through the Pepsi promotion. (If you haven't seen it yet, check it out! Specially-marked bottles contain a code, and you can enter this code at their website to try for various prizes. I've used three to try and win DLC tracks, and won every single time. It sounds like most other people are winning every time as well. Free DLC tracks!)
I've largely cut 'n' pasted the details from other sources, and simply cleaned it up a bit. But the reason I did it was so that I could see BOTH series at the same time, so that I'd know which game to get it for in the case of a duplicate.

Only one group of people came by to look at my apartment today. The girl was pretty cute as far as I can tell however I'm saddened by the fact that at about 2:25 in the following video she speculates that I am a girl. Oh well.
