June NPD Sales: Prototype Tops Another Slow Month

8
Overall videogame industry sales dropped 31% in June when compared to last year, as Radical's open-world title Prototype topped the North American software sales chart. "While this is solid performance for new IP, it's a relatively modest sales figure for any game capturing the top spot for the month," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier of Prototype's roughly 600k+ sales across both platforms.

The full list of software and hardware sales follows:

  1. Prototype (Radical, 360) - 419,900 units
  2. UFC 2009 Undisputed (Yuke's Osaka, Xbox 360) - 338,300 units
  3. EA Sports Active Bundle (EA Sports, Wii) - 289,100 units
  4. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (EA Sports, Wii) - 272,400 units
  5. Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) - 271,600 units
  6. Fight Night Round 4 (EA Sports, 360) - 260,800 units
  7. Fight Night Round 4 (EA Sports, PS3) - 210,300 units
  8. Mario Kart (Nintendo, Wii) - 202,100 units
  9. Red Faction: Guerilla (Volition, 360) - 199,400 units
  10. Infamous (Sucker Punch, PS3) - 192,700 units
"The Xbox 360 is the only platform to have realized a unit sales increase over last June," said Frazier of the hardware chart. "While Wii sales are down from last year, the platform is still realizing very strong sales month after month. Compared against historical performance of other systems this far into the console lifecycle, the unit sales performance is still strong."
  1. Nintendo DS - 766,500 units
  2. Wii - 361,700 units
  3. Xbox 360 - 240,600 units
  4. PlayStation 3 - 164,700 units
  5. PSP - 163,500 units
  6. PlayStation 2 - 152,700 units

I'd say that the real story here is that Infamous got in the top ten

Still not a very strong showing for a title that cost so much to make. And where is PS3 Prototype?

PS3 Prototype likely came in just below Infamous, considering its total was stated to be around 600k across both.

Saw that and was impressed. (Yes, that's about 350k total units? Not great, but not a bad showing for a summer game).

But yes, the fact that it beat out PS3 Prototype is an interesting point (as hinted by a story a few days ago here)

It could be for a number of reasons:

        1. Sony was heavily marketing Infamous because it was an exclusive.
        2. Infamous overall received higher review scores than Prototype, which might have influenced PS3 owners who were only going to buy one.
        3. And owners of both systems might have bought Prototype for the 360 because of its superior and more entrenched achievements system. (Don't laugh - I have several friends who always buy cross-platform games on 360 for just this reason.)
