IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey Screenshots Painstakingly Recreate Fun
by Nick Breckon, Jul 16, 2009 1:45pm PDTThese new screenshots from 1C's console flight sim IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey illustrate the challenge in recreating a 1940s flight environment.
"Building accurate 1940's environments using the latest in cutting edge satellite technology comes with a set of immediate problems, most obviously the 50 year time gap in buildings, foliage and other features, many of which did not exist at the time of the game's setting and others which are now long gone from the real word and need to be added," writes publisher 505 Games.
"To combat this, the development team have collated and pored over hundreds of wartime photos, documents and maps, painstakingly removing unwanted additions and recreating missing landscape features."
Birds of Prey will hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later this year with fifty missions, arcade and simulation controls, and multiplayer functionality. PSP and DS versions are also in development.

PROS: Awesome graphics, really cool bullet damage action, realistic in-flight problems (i.e., if you're shot in the wing, you can't turn left, etc.), lots of plane types, cool early-war missions (you know, the ones the Germans actually won but oddly never make it into 90% of video games).
CONS: Corny HUD, cornier music, cumbersome landing (maybe that was how it was, I don't know).

I was just listening to the latest Idle Thumbs (or maybe it was the one before that?) today where you guys talked about not ever using a flight stick. Here's your chance. I want shack previews. And not previews of what it's like to play with arcade settings.
