  I read an article about some new Nike shoes with a similar design philosophy: duplicating barefoot running, yet still protecting your feet. The treads are all super flexible, and allow you to you use more of your small foot muscles. It's apparently quite a transition to go from running shoes to barefoot running (or even these "barefoot-style" shoes), so there are three "stages" of these Nike shoes, with increasing levels of flexibility and articulated tread as you become acclimated to it.
  
  But the point of my reply: they look like normal shoes, so you won't feel like a goober wearing them. (Sorry, helvetica, for implying you look like a goober! On the up-side, you're just too darn cute, so I think you could pull it off. Plus, you're a chick--funky footwear is acceptable for women.)
