Evening Reading
by Nick Breckon, Jul 14, 2009 6:00pm PDTBattlefield 1943 is surprisingly fun. I'm sure I'll get more out of playing with Shackers on the PC, but flying in particular is clearly well-suited to the 360 controller.

Maybe I should do something productive instead.
Also, hopefully this kills me and puts me out of my misery.

Ever since the beta was first posted here, I have been using Digsby. I fell in love with it instantly and have been a big evangelical about it to my friends and people here whenever IM threads come up.
In the beginning it was the easiest to recommend. It wasn't quite complete and it was missing only a couple major features (like group chat and in-line formatting in AIM) but they released updates almost weekly to improve the thing. It felt like it was being actively supported.
Then they changed their installer to be some fucking bullshit installer that tries to install like 6 different pieces of software unless you are careful to click "decline" for each individual one before it'll actually install. It made it pretty rough for me to recommend. I had to clean that shit off of the very computers belonging to those I recommended the program to. People shouldn't be getting that bloat because of a program I suggested.
It's now 2 (?) years later and guess what? No group chat and no in-line formatting. They still push out updates about once every two months but you know what kind of bullshit it adds? A search feature. It's a feature that allows you to search the web (Google, Amazon, iTunes, NewEgg, etc.) by using a little search box built in to Digsby. This is a pretty obvious attempt to just slip their affiliate code in to your searches. Who the fuck would even ask for that feature? It's stupid and only makes me more frustrated that standard features like group chat are STILL not there.
I posted a comment on their blog announcing the update bemoaning this fact. I asked why features like search were being put before features that every other chat client out there already supports. My comment was deleted from their blog. I posted again asking why my comment was deleted. They deleted that one and then emailed me saying that it was probably auto-detected as spam. Great, so they're liars too. I mean sure okay they don't want negative feedback on their blog. Kind of an ass-like move but if they had at least just said that instead of making up a lie about the spam blocker I would have been happy.
The final straw was today. Digsby can push "Announcements" which come to you looking kind of like an IM from Digsby. They do this when an update is released to let people know they can restart their client to update. Or when there is a huge protocol issue where everyone is unable to login to a particular service. But this time it was just an ad. Here it is:

So fucking stupid. Why the fuck do I care? Send an email to your members if you want to announce a new service (I am not sure if this is made by the Digsby people or just something they're advertising for) - at least that way it can be easily ignored. Putting it as a popup on my computer, in the same place that I am used to reading important network status alerts? That's fucking stupid.

Went fishing off of westport this weekend for the future brother in law's bachelor party and caught a 24" & 22" coho salmon. The fiancee cooked them up to perfection with a little bit of lemon and brown sugar glaze. I just finished some of the leftovers we had with mashed potatoes and I think I'm in heaven :D.

I didn't follow the PSP scene and pretty much didn't touch my PSP at all for quite a while. Now I just want to update to the latest homebrew firmware so I can go out and buy some recent games. I currently have 4.01 M33 -2. What's the latest & best available hacked firmware? How is the update done these days?

Overlord 2 - Demo works fine, everything is great. I pick up the retail version yesterday and the damned thing runs just like HL2/Source games for me. Everything is about 20% faster than it should be, audio gets clipped, run speeds are way too fast.
Ghostbusters - 90%+ install done, and the fucking thing crashes.
How the fuck hard is it to make sure your installers can actually install a god damned game???

This is a shack approved title, yes? It wasn't even on my radar until it was mentioned it as RE4/5ish game with better controls. The last few shack approved titles I've played have been horrible, so I need overwhelming response that this is a good title. Or can you guys recommend anything else for the 360? The last thing I purchased before RE5 and Tiger Woods was Crackdown(this game was horrible just fyi and filled with bugs), I've hit a dry spell here lately.

UK Win7 pre-orders available now. Much cheaper if you order now than wait. If you want Professional, check out eBuyer (£80) and Amazon (£90) to save a bit of money. Home Premium is £45 on Amazon which saves you a fiver, too.

Though I did leave somewhat dissapointed.
Also their was too much romance. It was funny as hell at first but got to be too much; and where was the giant melée at the end? I was looking forward to that scene the most!

The Good:
It was free
I watched it during work time so I was kinda getting paid
I got free Popcorn and a drink
The CG was beautiful
There were some really nice sets and shots
Snape
There was a little bit of humour that was actually fairly funny.
The Bad:
I've not seen any of the others and only read the first book. The whole film is focused on the teenage love drama angle which I really had no interest in. There was no "previously on" so I didn't really know much about anything.
The film was pretty anticlimactic. Nothing really happens until the end and then it just kinda ends. Snape kills Dumbledore!
It's very child friendly - far too much so for my taste.
I'm not sure if the story made no sense because I didn't know anyone or if I was just missing something or what but basically the "half blood prince" of the title didn't really have much to do with anything. Harry had the book, used the book to make some potions and then it was decided it was bad and had to be hidden so he wouldn't be tempted (by what I'm not sure). What is a half blood prince? What is snape the prince of?
It felt very slow. The middle was a whole lot of build up and teen drama that seemed to amount to jack shit.

If you like board games this one is awesome. Very flexible in the amount of players and the time it takes to play. Tons of options via the expansions and being able to pick and choose pieces of the expansions to use. Basically it has game options surpassing most hardcore PC strategy games and that surprised me when I started getting into it.
It captures a nice HP Lovecraft atmosphere while not making it as hopeless as a literal translation of the source material to a game would make it. There is flavor text everywhere to keep you in the spirit of the game and every single noun in the books gets a nod at some point. It's a pretty tough game but I think a lot of that was due to my group fudging some rules and making it way harder than it needed to be.
Played it 4 or 5 times so far. Next game we add Dunwich Horror! Supposedly it balances and paces things out nicely. It's the only board game since Risk I've really been into and I'm hooked on buying all the expansions even though I have only played the base game. >.<
