Alan Wake PC Release 'Up in the Air'
by Chris Faylor, Jul 10, 2009 10:04am PDTRemember when Max Payne creator Remedy suggested that its "psychological action thriller" Alan Wake could hit Xbox 360 first and the promised PC edition would follow? Well, it now appears that a PC release of the game isn't a question of when, but if.
"Other than [the Xbox 360 version] the plans are up in the air and open," lead writer Sam Lake told Edge. When asked if the game was still coming to PC, he said that "once we're done with the 360 version we'll evaluate the situation and see what makes sense."
Originally announced for the PC and "next generation consoles" in 2005, Alan Wake was later confirmed for Xbox 360 and PC when Microsoft signed on to publish in 2006, with the company recently specifying a "spring 2010" release for the Xbox 360 edition.

It's not about "making less profit" it is about making any profit & recovering loses.

Basicly in the future, All pc games will be like MMOs, where you need an account and you have to connect to a server or service to play them. monthly fee or not, depending on new content.

So spare the "PC is doomed" crap, because 1.) This Alan Wake thing isn't official. 2.) MS hasn't supported to PC as a platform for quite awhile. Yet, consistently, the PC has the most exclusives every single year and the most AAA/AA titles. Search for the PC exclusives on google and they are there. In fact, a guy named AdrianWerner from the GS forums has a huge list. More exclusives on PC than any other platform and all of them combined. Thing is, PC will always be here and will always be successful. Did you know that last year alone 47 million gaming desktops were sold? Yes, Google it. That is desktops specifically for gaming. Along with 21 million Laptops specifically for gaming.
I'm sorry, consoles are the only ones on their way out. When their cycle ends, it's over. PC has and always will be here. I've been a PC gamer since 1990 and consistently every year, the PC has the best games. Spare the bullshit people. It's getting old. Even if the Alan Wake thing is true, 1 game doesn't negate an entire library with 5x the amount of AAA/AA titles than any console and the dozens more PC exclusives planned for the future (yes, again, google it, it's not difficult to find).
There, i've said my piece.

Long term, isn't the PC market more valuable to Microsoft? If they let PC gaming wither on the vine, don't they lose their ability to push technical standards and influence what hardware companies do? This is important because PC gaming hardware is the only place/market that evolves new architectures at a regular pace because it's the only market that can justify the massive R&D costs. Without the PC, DirectX becomes much less powerful because it essentially becomes an Xbox API instead of a cross platform API. Does this not leave the door open for someone else to supplant/marginalize DirectX and perhaps move PC gaming off or away from Windows?
Also, the Xbox 360 only has a lifespan of 3-5 more years yet Microsoft is pouring the majority of their time and effort into it. We all know that the console business is a hit and miss affair. You are going to release a dud console eventually. It's just a question of odds because you can't anticipate what the next big thing is (i.e. Sony focused on Cell while Nintendo focused on the Wiimote). The chance of the Xbox 720 being a runaway, PS2 sized hit is not very good. Meanwhile, Microsoft's bread and butter platform, which provided the original seed money to enter the console business, weakens from neglect. Is this not a strategic blunder in the making?

At least release the game for two platforms.
From this point on, I refuse to buy anything from them that is not an OS. And if Google's Chrome or some other OS can rise to the occasion and support PC gamers, I will jump ship.

I'd prefer if it's going to be a console game, that it not ship on PC at all. Keep that crap where it belongs. I'm not interested in "Ports for Windows" Microsoft.
I think Valve is the only major studio left now that hasn't "sold out".

I honestly believe there will be a PC port SOMEwhere in the future; it'll be later for sure, which sucks in its own right, but I'm confident my beast of a system will rip through this game at some point.

Thanks, Remedy and Microsoft Game Studios. We really appreciate it.
And how is that loyalty returned? You stab me in the fucking heart. After hearing that my commitment is so insignificant that you might just decide to brush it aside, I don't know if I'll even buy it if you do decide to release it on PC.
Fuck you, Remedy. Just fuck you.
