Alien Breed Evolution Remakes Amiga Classic

Worms developer Team17 today officially announced Alien Breed Evolution, an Unreal Engine 3-powered remake of its 1991 Amiga top-down shooter Alien Breed.

Actual alien breeding unlikely to feature.

Few details accompanied the announcement, other than that Alien Breed Evolution will be a download-only title with singleplayer and 2-player co-op both local and online. An Xbox 360 release is due late this year, with a PlayStation 3 version planned to follow.

The original Alien Breed saw space marines cleansing a space station of Giger-esque aliens while collecting credits to purchase increasingly flamboyant firearms.

Nice to see an application of UE3 that does suffer from the "generic wall texture having the same visual complexity as a vast, open landscape" noise issue. Then again, maybe its just the fact that it is a top down perspective.

I wanted to get this back in the day but I only had the Amiga 500 and Amiga 3000. Neither had the AGA chipset you needed to play this game.

I wonder what ever happened to Alien Swarm: Infested which was supposed to be the sequel to the UT2K4 mod Alien Swarm but instead based on the Source Engine. Sad indeed.

Oh wow, this brings back the memories. I remember Team 17 made a pretty good Alien Breed-themed Doom clone for the Amiga. The fact that it ran reasonably well on my Amiga 1200 (12Mhz CPU / 2Mb RAM / fiddly bit-plane graphics designed for 2D scrolling games making a chore of plotting pixels) was an incredible feat of software engineering at the time.

Seems a shame they can't knock up their own cool 3D engine but I suppose the resources to do so are beyond most smaller devs nowadays. Jumpers for goalposts ...

A small part of me died when you said there would be no actual alien breeding. Am I to assume that there will also be a lack of evolution? This is surely one of the greater upsets of this century.
