Morning Discussion: Western Fever

It's not all that common for me to beat a game, let alone go so far as to complete all of its side missions, so for me to put that much energy into GUN ...well, it's saying something.

I'm not sure exactly what it says, mind you. The four-year-old game certainly has some flaws and snags--the story isn't especially noteworthy, the last boss fight falls into the trap of introducing a new mechanic, the Pony Express side missions are blah--but I'm a sucker for the western theme and the frantic near-mindless shooting that ensues.

Plus there's something appealing about an open-world game that doesn't require dozens or hundreds of hours to finish up entirely. And most of the side missions--bounty hunting, poker, acting like a law man--well, I sure didn't mind them. They were quick and fun.

Now ...what next? It's too bad Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is only playable on the original Xbox--I've got a mean hankerin' to play it, but I'm not ready to dig the green brick out--and Red Dead Redemption isn't until next year, so, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, maybe?

I wish they had good Old West based FPS games for the PC. All I ever played was Dead Man's Hand, and that had invisible walls, immovable doors, and controls ripped straight from a console.

This might be my issue with it. I played it on PC with mouse and keyboard. The controls felt stiff and awkward, like any rough console port. Also, the gameplay didn't seem to be up to the standards of other 3rd person shooters I've loved (Max Payne, Freedom Fighters, Hitman, etc).

That is something that's pretty missing from the PC. Rare in general really. Makes you wonder if PC's came around in the 50's if there would've been a lot more of 'em.

Well, because it's a niche why don't they make MORE games there? I grew up watching movies like Fistful of Dollars, /The Shootist]/, and The Outlaw Josey Wales. Why wouldn't I want to be my own High Plains Drifter, fucking up incredibly stereotypical native americans and mexicans in a border town?

I can't say enough how much fun I'm having with the new Call of Juarez. They really learned their lesson from the first one and made the second one actually fun. I couldn't get into the first one, no matter how hard I try. Now, I'm finding myself itching to play Bound in Blood when I'm not, dreaming about it, and grinning like a fool when in a gunfight. The gunfights really make this game so awesome.

The cover system takes a bit to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's brilliant.

Now I want to go back in and play some more. People should give this a chance if they relish the idea of a good western FPS. This game does the genre justice.

Actual wild west shootouts happened so fast though, it's not really game worthy. They could have a bunch of mini-games leading up to the actual shooting: glaring at your opponent, adjusting the brim of your hat, squinting into the sun, twitching your fingers above the grips of your revolvers, etc..

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood has it, and it's pretty good the way they pull it off. Use the mouse to keep your hand as close to the gun as possible, while moving to keep your opponent in sight. Once the bell sounds, you jerk the mouse to grab the gun and then shoot when the red cursor appears. Not as easy as it sounds, but the challenge is just right while in the moment of the standoff.

I really enjoyed CoJ Bound In Blood, it was a lot of fun. It looked amazing on the highest graphic settings, I was really impressed. The story was kind of boring and predictable, but the gameplay was fun, and upgrading weapons was interesting.
