Fight Night Round 4 Update Adding Button Controls

13
EA today announced that an upcoming download to Fight Night Round 4 will add the option of using face buttons to control the game.

The free update will be released in September on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. "We strongly believe that the refined Total Punch Control is the most intuitive way to throw punches in Fight Night Round 4, but we also want fans of the franchise to have an option," said EA senior producer Dean Richards to Kotaku.

Another DLC pack coming in August will offer a new gym, new equipment, an Xbox 360-exclusive alternate version of Sugar Ray Leonard, and new gameplay sliders that allow players to tweak "Counter Punch Window, Boxer Stamina, and Punch Accuracy."

wow, that pretty much ruins it. The tpc really takes some skills, but it will always be easier just to combo away with buttons :(

Well, they didn't say that those controls would work online, so I wouldn't worry about it yet.

I disagree. I've always been better with the TPC, and have a wider array of punches available to me and more options in general when using it. Using buttons is a handicap... anybody who is serious about the game probably plays with the sticks.

I've always loved the FN series. But I was sad to see this not included in 4. I've always used the buttons. I do so because I love choice, and the fact that that choice was taken away from me almost caused me to return the game. I will, however, admit that I've enjoyed using the new TPC in comparison to the TPC in FN3. This feels much more intuitive to what I want to do, even though after 3 weeks of playing, I still miss some combos. =(

However, since this is a reply to CyCo, here's my question: How does using TPC versus using the buttons give you a "wider array of punches"? If its anything like FN3 was, you'll be able to map the jabs and hooks, and still use the stick for uppercuts. If anything, I find that the new TPC takes away some punches, unless you're really good at the game. Again, after just 3 weeks, I still can't seem to throw a jab to the body when I want. It's sort of "got to happen". At least in previous FN, you could use the trigger or button to indicate a body punch.

But as I said, all in all, I enjoy the new TPC than I did in FN3. So I will probably continue to use it, except maybe in training sessions. =)

You won't have a wider range of punches available with buttons in FNR4 as long as they do it right. If they can allow me to punch to the body with the buttons without having to duck down (easily done by moving "switch stances" to the back button or something and putting a punch modifier on LB) then you get every punch on either control scheme.

Since when is adding arbitrary control difficulty a good thing?
