Morning Discussion: Giant Cogs Turn
by Chris Faylor, Jun 26, 2009 7:10am PDTIf you're at all bored in the coming days, I heartily suggest checking out the Trine PC demo that was released yesterday. Gorgeous graphics, quality side-scrolling gameplay, and best of all, charm. "The Wizard had quite a reputation with the ladies," you know.
And though I'd usually prefer to play an action-filled puzzle-platformer such as this on a console, I have to say that the keyboard and mouse controls work so well, especially when drawing objects into existence as ye olde Wizard or aiming the Thief's bow and arrow, that the sheer thought of using a gamepad to do so is just ...unappealing.

I can't login to my Shackmail account on Shackmail.com. Granted, this is the first time I've tried to do so because I figure it's just going to waste sitting there. But! Am I doing something wrong? I paid with Paypal for my Mercury account... does this mean I have to use a POP3 email client instead of the website itself?
In the username box I type in: Legolas5@shackmail.com
In the password box I type in my Fileshack/Shacknews password.
Thanks in advance for any advice :-)

Let me clarify this. When I say "sex", i really mean "sex appeal". I mean the value of : dressing appropriately, grooming ones self, having an attractive personality, and overall being a good candidate for a trustworthy, sexual encounter. Sex appeal.
There is sex appeal in the hip hop culture, definitely in rock culture, MOST definitely in the electronic music culture. There is sex appeal of course in the Fashion design culture. There's even sex appeal in food culture. Sports, etc. You get the idea.
In gaming there is no sex appeal. There is no real collective desire to look, smell, behave, or act good. In fact, you are rewarded if you do the opposite. You're "hardcore" if you don't shower, act like a dick head, and wear black tennis shoes with socks and khaki pants and white t-shirts, letting oil collect on your face over your acne - never combing your hair and just overall looking like more of a douche the average (homo-repressed "bro" attitude notwithstanding) fraternity member. this is conclusive to you and you are going to take my advice if you are guilty

It feels a lot like Pikmin, except better in many ways. The retarded little guys you command actually have a personality in this game. They're even cute, in an evil gremlin sort of way. The gameplay feels more varied than Pikmin as well. There's puzzles and such you have to complete, but it's more of a cross between a basic RTS and a Pikmin style puzzle game. It's hard to explain, but it's like the enemies are a mobile puzzle, they move and such so it's not static like most puzzles are. But they move in very predictable ways, so you can still pause to figure things out.
Probably the best thing about it is the atmosphere and personality. You're minions are cute little retarded guys and watching them cause mayhem and destruction ends up being both funny and satisfying. The overly idyllic feel everything has just makes it all the funnier to destroy. Clubbing super fuzzy baby seals or smashing the town that's so cheery and cute it makes your head spin is just plain fun.
If I had one complaint I'd say the game could have used a bigger budget/more time. It's very fun and creative, so kudos to the guys who made it; and so it feels almost unfair that drivel like Halo 3 gets the budget and time to make everything shine with a thousand coats of polish while these guys have to make due with accepting clearly limited time to playtest and work out all the kinks. It's not like there's anything game breaking, but you'll get stuck on little things like a bad camera, unclear instructions, and ect. maybe once an hour. Still if you feel like a fun puzzle game, or your dream is to play a game where you can actually be evil (as opposed to just a dick) then this is an awesome game to play this summer.

i've got a bunch of files named:
(null)
(null)1
(null)2
...ect
I need a file renaming program that will rename a bunch at a time to something like "filename01.xxx" "filename02.xxx" ...ect
I use renameit for my renaming needs but it doesn't do numbering schemes and I'd hate to have to go through and rename all the damn files. I just did a batch of about 35 and used copy/paste and put the numbers in manually, i've got about 200 left to do and i'd rather have a program do it for me.
thanks

Think about it, 30 feet in the air in the real world, just boxes, you know and it'd just look more fake, you know? And by adding more doo-dads, you know, stuff on the...stuff. Stuff on the robots, more car parts, and...you know you can just make it look more real."

I'm a complete anime noob. I really enjoyed playing Shogo:MAD though, so I was thinking I'd probably enjoy anime involving mecha (or big robots kicking ass in general). I assume I need to be looking in the direction of Gundam and/or Macross, but there seem to be a billion flavors of each, so I don't really know where I should start.
Any suggestions?

Anyone following some kind of SSD news site or anything?
I want to know when SSD "3.0" is coming out, 1.0 sucked, 2.0 is not half bad with a couple of small issues and I'm hoping the next revision is just plain good?
Before or after Windows 7?
