MAG Trailer: Putting the FPS Genre 'on Steroids'
by Chris Faylor, Jun 17, 2009 10:03am PDTWith Zipper's 256-player PlayStation 3 exclusive MAG (once known as Massive Action Game) slated for fall, publisher Sony is kicking its marketing campaign into high gear.
Case in point, the first video developer diary (below) just surfaced over on the European PlayStation.Blog, examining various elements of the forthcoming shooter MMO, such as the "shadow war" that private military contractors are fighting over ...contracts.
MAG is "basically trying to take the first-person genre and put it on steroids and take it to the next level," Zipper lead game designer Andy Beaudoin explains in the clip.

said it's next gen for FPS but to me it looks like a crappy console shooter with a bunch of players being the only selling point.

They aren't making Quake and then spawning 256 guys into a small map. The servers are not peer to peer, they are running dedicated servers with very large maps. If you have a map the size of lower Manhattan and two players are on opposite ends the servers know this, neither player needs to have any data sent to them.
The thing I haven't seen Sony talk about is the pricing model because last I heard, this was a pay to play game.

Playing near your squad leader gives you passive buffs like increased reload time or faster movement speed, and each squad leader can issue orders on the fly to attack or defend objectives, etc...
Squad leaders can call in UAV Recon, Cluster Bombs, Mortar Barrages and Artillery Strikes.
Platoon leaders can call in Bunker Buster missiles, Strafing Runs, Sensor Sweeps, and Gas Bombardments.
Officers in Charge can call in Signal Jamming, Comms Jamming, Satellite Sweeps, Tactical Strikes, Blockades and Rapid Deployment.
On top of all that, officers have access to an officer-only audio channel.
Seems like it won't be the usual clusterfuck...

Heck, full Battlefield maps were nothing but clusterf... of people trying to board all available vehicles and then drive them straight into enemy territory.
