Ghostbusters PC Lacks Online Multiplayer (Updated)

Update: IGN's review confirms that Ghostbusters PC does indeed lack multiplayer.

Original: With the PC edition of Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters--due in North American retailers tomorrow--pegged at $30 in the US, you might have thought it one heck of a good deal, especially with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions going for double that.

However, it appears that the PC edition isn't as fully-featured as some have thought, as fansite Spook Central reports that the PC version lacks the online multiplayer and downloadable content support of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases.

That said, the site claims that the PC version sports one feature the others don't: the necessity of an internet connection, said to be "required for first-time authentication."

While Terminal Reality developed the single-player portion of Ghostbusters for the three platforms listed above, the multiplayer aspect was handled by Threewave Studios. The studio previously said it was only working on "the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of multiplayer," suggesting that multiplayer has been a long-planned PC omission.

Alongside the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 editions of Ghostbusters, the game will also arrive on PS2, Wii and Nintendo DS tomorrow, with the latter three having been developed by Red Fly and sporting different visuals and gameplay from Terminal Reality's work.

As for Europe, the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 editions arrive in the territory on June 19. Per an exclusivity agreement with Sony, the remaining console versions will arrive in Europe later this year, with a PSP release hitting worldwide this fall.

Shacknews has contacted Atari for more details on the PC edition of Ghostbusters.

Although I'm sure this will only add to the pirating numbers.

It will be pirated hugely even if it had multiplayer. I've pirated and I'm sure most people have. I don't make excuses and I will buy it immediately if it's good. I find too many people pirate a game and love it. Then they find some bullshit excuse not to purchase. In the end it's "I should be able to get it for free." people feel they are owed the game.

I can honestly say I'd never buy a half-assed port that loses an aspect of the game when ported and I'd probably beat in a few hours. $30 is highway robbery for this game. I'm not going to pirate it either, sounds like a waste of bandwidth and HDD space. The fact that this game was almost canceled and is now rushing to release screams that it will be full of bugs, both on the consoles and even more so for the PC's. The only time I've ever pirated a game was when I couldn't find it in a store. That was back before Amazon though, since then I've purchased those games. Catching up on the music though is putting me in the poor house. :P
