Morning Discussion: Must Be The Moon
by Chris Faylor, Jun 15, 2009 7:24am PDTMonday? Already? Well, if you say so Mr. iPhone--I trust ya.
'Twas a wonderful weekend, full of video games and naps and catching up on old television shows and movies. But the show must go on! Let's see what Monday brings.
However, I do come away from this weekend with one lingering question: What kind of apartment complex doesn't have its pool open by mid-June? Doesn't that sort of thing usually happen around Memorial Day? I was looking forward to a quick dip :(

I'm thinking it will be longer this time around, as 5 years would mean a new MS console next year. That seems too soon ... to me it feels like we're really just entering the prime period for the consoles, where developers can really utilize the cpu and gpu to its full extent. I'm thinking 2011-2012 before the new consoles are out. Thoughts?

Anyone other bikers that could share experiences with this bike or a similar model? I might do some off-roading, but nothing serious.

My mother is leaving for Europe in a week. She's on Rogers Network here in Toronto with a shitty motorola that is locked to the Rogers network. What is the best approach to mobile connectivity while in Europe?
Just grabbing a new SIM in europe won't work since phone is locked to Rogers right? Prolly just to buy a shitty phone in Sweden or Estonia and use it while over there right?

Hey have you guys played minecraft yet?
http://www.minecraft.net/
it's a java applet that runs in your browser, the game itself is basically a huge first person lego game... you build or destroy whatever you want in the world which is pretty cool.
Cooler still: you can join multiplayer servers where people have built shit already, and the best part is there is only one spawn point in the world and that's where people respawn if they hit R, and it's where they show up when they join a server...
so I've found the most effective griefing technique is to dig a hole right under the spawn point as far as it will let you, leagues underground till you hit the bottom of the world, then people have to dig a giant staircase out of the ground to make it back to the surface

Video Card = EVGA 8800GTS (G80 Version) sp112 KO 640MB
My problem. Since day freakin 1 nVidia and EVGA has screwed up all the drivers ever released.
My Card's Spec's.
GPU : 540 MHz
Shader : 1242 MHz
Ram : 850 Mhz
The stupid drivers always clock everything at
GPU : 576 Mhz
Shader : 1350Mhz
Ram : 900 Mhz
This overclocking of my card causes major artifacts and crashing.....
(2 years ago it took me 3 days to figure out why)
RivaTuner used to be my god send, because with that, I could fix the Shader Clock speeds (and others) down to where it SHOULD be.
Now RivaTuner suddenly doesn't recognize the card, and I can't change any of the settings....
nTune, PowerStrip... these have all failed me... they only change the GPU and Ram Clock....
Its the Shader clock that's killing my system.
Does anyone have any software suggestions that would allow me to adjust my Shader Clock.
Thank you,

The Supreme Court, agreeing on Monday to hear four new cases, said it would decide whether an individual who owes on a student loan may wipe out the debt — at least partly — in a bankruptcy without showing that the debt posed an “undue hardship.” The case is United Student Aid Fund v. Espinosa (08-1134).
http://www.scotusblog.com/wp/court-to-rule-on-student-loan-debts/
The new bankruptcy rules are fucking bullshit because it's almost impossible to erase a student loan debt in bankruptcy. It's also difficult to justify that sort of behavior when the almost-punitive interest rates lenders charge more than compensate for the risk (6.8% for Stafford and 8.5% for GradPLUS). Hope the Court really puts some serious thought into this, although I'm a bit afraid of what the ruling will be like. I'll start preparing my bankruptcy in anticipation!

So after installing our enterprise Office 2007 shit, Internet Explorer simply won't launch. I click the icon, it pulses, and the browser never launches. Nothing more happens.
Task manager shows two explorer.exe running. That's it. Nothing happens.
Opera and FF both work fine, so does Office, Outlook, everything else. But IE8 simply won't launch.
I need that POS for our enterprise stuff.
Any ideas how to fix this?

I don't read a lot (and when I do 90% of the time it's an audiobook) but I would like to do a bit more. All I have read has pretty much been sci fi. I really liked Timeline, Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, and the rest of the Ender books. I have read a bunch of the Xanth books and they were fun enough.
However, I like the idea of trying something in a different direction. The problem is I don't really know how to describe the kind of book I am looking for. It started with my desire to read Moby Dick. I really want to read that, but I also know how fucking long it is and I know with my current only-moderate level of interest I would probably give up on it. But the idea of that kind of book has stuck with me. Honestly though I don't know what Moby Dick is like so maybe I am totally off about using that as a base inspiration.
I'll try to explain anyway: I want something... grueling. I don't mean the act of reading the book but the subject matter. I want something that explores the dark side of humanity and I want something that doesn't have a happy ending. Ugh, even that explanation barely conveys what I am trying to say but let's start there and see what suggestions you guys have.
