Evening Reading
by Nick Breckon, Jun 11, 2009 6:00pm PDTSo after eight months of my plastic instruments collecting dust, I started playing Rock Band 2 again the other night. Unfortunately, nearly all of the DLC that's been released in that time doesn't interest me in the slightest. I know music taste runs the gamut, but at the very least I wish there was a bit less metal, and a couple more Radiohead tracks. Also, how can you get Styx and not release Mr. Roboto?
Oh well. I played The Beatles at E3, and not being the biggest Beatles fan in the world, it was more fun than I expected. Guess that'll be my next fix.

Minecraft for Xbox 360 dev working on 'Adventure' update
"All 3 mods have received a very major update. Even if you've played with previous versions of these mods, it is worth taking another run through.
One big reason the Fixpack update is so big is that previous versions couldn't fix problems in the engine. But with the help of engine guru scient, even the deepest bugs have now been fixed, like TNO's hit point gain and THACO and the entire morale system, which makes fear spells work as they should and Dak'kon's sword upgradable as it was meant to be. Lots of non-engine related fixes too... my favorite individual fixes are that turning the Anarchists in to the Harmonium now comes with consequences for your relations with both factions, and the Tenement of Thugs is now what it was always meant to be, a Thieves' Playground. And that's just the beginning.
Unfinished Business also has a lot of great new content. Among the restorations are 27 fully voiced flirts between Morte and female zombies that makes the game feel fresh and new straight from the Mortuary. Also, 9 restored creatures and dialogues in the Lower Ward, additional Mebbeth dialogue is restored, and even a new content mod that also restores additional original dialogue, the Expanded Deionarra's Truth mod, which has received strong approval from original PS:T designers."

Never thought I'd say this but ummm I want the start button from Windows 7 on my work machine.. holy shit!
(I'm getting old and lazy! I can type the name of the application faster than my eyes can search for it)
(Is there a solution to this under XP? - Windows Search 4.0 is horrible if I recall)

Anathema - Closer
http://www.monstunes.com/?p=230 (listen here)
These brits do amazing atmospheric rock. Think Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Muse and Porcupine Tree. Anathema is easily in the same class, and their 2003 album "A Natural Disaster" is one of the best rock albums of the decade, imo. It's classy, emotional but not cheesy or overwrought at all, and a great listen. These guys deserve more attention.

http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/06/windows-7-to-be-shipped-in-europe-sans-internet-explorer.ars
As first reported by CNET and confirmed by Microsoft, OEMs will have the option to add the browser back in, ship another browser, or ship multiple browsers. "The E versions of Windows 7 will include all the features and functionality of Windows 7 in the rest of the world, other than browsing with Internet Explorer," Microsoft notes. "Computer manufacturers will be able to add any browser they want to their Windows 7 machines, including Internet Explorer, so European consumers who purchase new PCs will be able to access the Internet without any problem. Consumers will also be able to add any Web browser to their PCs, to supplement or replace the browsers preinstalled by their computer manufacturer."
Microsoft notes that the decision affects both OEM and Retail versions of Windows 7 products. While OEMs will have access to a free "IE8 pack" that allows them to add the browser back in, consumers who purchase retail copies will not have a browser that they can use to download a browser. Therefore, Microsoft will offer IE8 via CD, FTP, and retail channels. It looks like Mozilla, Opera, Google, and Apple will have to do the same if they want European Windows 7 adopters to have access to their browsers.

Citigroup Bailout Pays Taxpayers Three Times as Much as S&P 500
June 12 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. taxpayers have reaped a 7.5 percent return on the $45 billion used to rescue Citigroup Inc., more than three times as much as if the money had been invested in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.
