Morning Discussion: Do What You Wanna
by Chris Faylor, Jun 09, 2009 7:22am PDTWere this a more typical year, there wouldn't be that many new games on retail shelves immediately after E3. I'd be forced to choose between playing something a bit older, or sitting in front of my television and pining for the fruits that fall might bring.
This year, though, this post-E3 era is fairly loaded. There's Starfy, Prototype, Rock Band PSP, Tiger Woods and Blueberry Garden, just to name the ones that immediately catch my eye. Toss in stuff like Indiana Jones and Go Play Circus Star, and it's a busy week.
Of course, the real trick is finding the time to play a majority of those, especially with inFamous sitting there half-completed and the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta underway. Then again, I suppose there are worse problems than having too many games to play...

While I wasn't rolling on the floor laughing, there were certain parts that were just awesome. Definitely a new favorite that people will be quoting for a while.

We haven't talked about this in a while. This is the thread where you make lame excuses for why you're not going to be there.
Plus, it's going to be hot and busy as fuck. You pale videogamers will want to slather yourselves up in sunscreen or you're going to look ridiculous when you show up back to work on Monday.

-I did logo/pascal in HS. So I get data structures and syntax, just don't remember specifics
-would like to start w/ an easy web language but something that would complement moving to iphone programming
-I suck at rote step by step extensions, work well talking w/ others or going from examples that I can extrapolate from
Do anyone have suggestions as towards what language or learning resources I should look at?

The concern is that since Remedy is not making Max Payne 3 (and presumably has little or no involvement), how can this be a "real" or "good" Max Payne game? No one who hasn't seen the game can make any educated guesses as to whether it is good, but let's come up with examples where a game not originating from the original dev house HAS been good.
- Sunstorm's Duke it Out in DC
- Sunstorm's Cryptic Passage for Blood
- I never played either of those 3rd party F.E.A.R. add-ons, any good?
- Your example here please

Telltale releases two series a year and they have to be close to matching Lucasart's golden age output.
Her Interactive puts out several Nancy Drew adventure games a year
Autumn Moon has Vampyre Story 2 and Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island coming out
Adventure Company releases several Horror themed adventure games a year.
Capcom keeps pluging along with Ace Attorney releases.
I'm sure I'm missing a few. We have more graphic adventure games released per year than we did back in the 80s. The genre isn't dead. What is needed for mainstream press to see this? EA and Actard to start releasing adventure games?

How many shackers are out of work and looking right now? How long has it been? It's a slow market up here in the midwest--there are jobs, but companies are definitely taking their time.

Rockstar Games' Max Payne 3 is apparently getting Game Informer cover treatment this month, as early issues of the magazine appear to be already in subscriber's hands. So, what's going on with Max Payne these days?
According to early, still rumored details from the mag, Max Payne 3 will move the series to Sao Paulo, Brazil, featuring a paunchier, balder, more heavily bearded Payne. The game is said to take place more than a decade after Max Payne 2, but the middle-aged pot-bellied Payne hasn't lost his penchant for "bullet time" slow-motion action over the years. That mechanic is reportedly still intact.
Another rumored update is that Max Payne 3 will feature some sort of multiplayer component. We'll have to wait until the newest issue of Game Informer arrives at the office to learn more.

What the fuck? This is the computer equivalent of being killed by the Black Plague!
I'm working on some code that will predict the next date to follow a set of given dates. For the moment I'm working on predicting next year's last frost date, because I was able to find local weather station data going back to 1893 (very cool).
I was investigating using linear regression and treating each date as merely an incremented independent variable, and then looking for the day of the year. The problem is that there's no (or rather very little) correlation between a set of incremental numbers and the day of the year of the last frost for that year. The coefficient of determination (r^2) =~ 0.09. So there's a regularity in that each year the date of last frost is going to be around the same time (April 15th), however there's hardly any slope to the line at all and therefore no correlation. I just don't think I can use the linear model to predict new dates this way.
I was using intervals between the dates to predict new ones (I talked with electroly about this), as they increase as the independent variable increases, however for this I get like June 7th, which is way way out of bounds.
Now I'm not sure where to turn, as I'd like to look into using multiple linear regression so I can do predictions based on whether the date will be a weekend day, or a certain day of the month, or a certain day of the week, etc., and combine them together and determine the correlation for each. I just don't know how. Or even if it's possible anymore because my brain wants me to die :(

I just nuked my Vista machine, cleaned off most of the junkware that came with it. But now I need a good AV that works with Vista. AVG was... well... slow. My boot time hit 4 minutes.
Whats the recommended Vista solution. Yes, install XP is a valid answer, but not an option this time.
