If there's one thing (there are many) I've never really understood about the US military is the way 'married/parents' people are paid. Let's say we have Soldier Tim and Soldier Bob. Both joined the military on the same day, are in the same exact job, are the same rank, same age, etc. The only difference between the two is that Jim is single and Bob is married with a kid.

Jim is going to be living in dorms (no expense, but small space, no real sense of privacy, little choice or decision making when it comes to your living arrangements), on base, dealing with room inspections, assigned roommate, eating at the dining facility (which is free, more on that later).

Bob will be getting paid a sizeable amount of money for living off-base plus more money for buying food as well. He will also have the benefit of choosing what foods he wants to consume, where he wants to live and with whom. Some of his military benefits will also be shared with his wife/kid, which all means more money for the government.

Now obviously there are some pro's to Jim's situation, but being a "Jim" myself I can tell you it's not great. I'm not posting this so much to complain rather than hear opinions on something I hadn't give n much though to until someone pointed it out.

In the civilian world, an employer would laugh you out of the office/place of work if you came in and asked for more money because you got married/had a kid. It seems so very odd that these two guys, Jim and Bob, are compensated very differently for doing the same job just as good as the other.

Interest check: Shack TF2 Pug Edition

I enjoy coordinating and hosting wacky games to mix things up a bit, and here I am with another idea. I talked with terath a bit and both of us agreed that a TF2 6v6 pick-up game might be fun. The Ars folks do it on occasion with their community so we figured it was worth a shot here. I'd like to think that there are a few people that would be interested in how the competitive format works and this would be a nice way to give them some exposure. The 6v6 format will not appeal to everyone but is something I'd like people to try before completely writing it off.

I don't have a set timeframe but this is something that I can put together quickly (even tonight if enough people are interested). The idea is to play a single map (which typically takes anywhere from a half hour to an hour) but go as long as people want to. I will be (pleasantly) surprised if I'm able to get more than a full game's worth of people onboard, but I'd be happy to accommodate more.

So, yeah, reply if you're interested.

Also: as much as I enjoy the regular crits threads, I'd rather this not become one. This is will inherently appeal to a minority and I'd rather the uninterested people be civil or stay out.

L.A. Noire - whatever happened to this game? A new PS3 exclusive rockstar game was announced, is this one gone?
No GT5 release date - at least they showed something. And damage is at least confirmed for some modes.

Do any shackers live in Texas? Looking for a cool place to go that's like 3 hours or less from Austin this weekend. the mod is pretty insane, there's so much stuff going on the screen all the time. It's really hard too; don't go into the den of evil at level 1 you'll get raped. tons and tons of end game content. new items, new crafting system i have no idea how it works yet. complete overhaul of class skills. mercenaries are completely different.
my necro is level 33 and starting on act 3 ( fuck that act its so bad collecting that guy's body parts :( ) and it's pretty fun so far. i've got 2 other characters around level 15 and i'm not opposed to starting a new guy.

wow, am i alone in thinking the new FNR4 is terrible? i feell like i have the punching power of a cancer patient. i don't know if it's the animaiton or just the impact sounds, but the punching seems really weak. feels like your fists are made of cotton balls.

and the much hyped graphics are really cartoony. i prefer the more realistic UFC style.

What's the most satisfying gun reload animation/sound in an FPS? I always liked the plasma gun reload in Doom 3 for some reason. Some of the ones in Fallout 3 are pretty cool too.

New Toy! I bought a bow. It turns out there is a free archery range very close to my house. I've never owned my own equipment. The last time I did target practice was in college.

Do you think we'll ever see the resurgence of cartridge based game consoles?

Given the recent popularity of SSD's and how most smaller amounts of storage are relegated to bits of flash, I think it could happen. With flash based media, you could have large chunks of game data in a small physical package with insanely fast read speeds in comparison to our current disc based solutions.

Is this all just a pipe dream or do you think it's a viable alternative to what we have in the consoles today?
