Kojima Helping Birth New Castlevania on PS3, 360

Konami has announced Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, a new addition to the long-running action adventure series--though not a new game in itself.

Coming from Clive Barker's Jericho developer Mercury Steam, Lords of Shadow was originally announced without the Castlevania tag last year. It was then described as a "dark fairy tale" with exploration and puzzle-solving elements that focused on "one man's journey to discover the true meaning of sacrifice amidst murder and betrayal."

In addition, Metal Gear Solid developer Kojima Productions was revealed to be assisting Mercury Steam with the game. "My role is to support them," said Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima. "I'm going to help them to give birth to this Castlevania."

"In the very near future we'll show you more and more," he added.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is to be released in 2010 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I actually would love to see what current hardware could do for 2D sprites and animation. I would imagine that a current 2D castlevania would be a beautiful game, being very close to playing an animated motion picture. Of course, it would take a ridiculous amount of manpower to make a fully 2D animated game at 60 FPS packed with unique animations to the quality I'm thinking of. One of the biggest reasons for the switch to 3D - aside from the change in graphical presentation - was because 3D is much cheaper to produce. With 2D, every frame of animation has to be hand designed and programed. With 3D, you can simply set a skeleton to a 3D model and have it do what you want.

I'm not in the industry but I'm pretty sure possible to do 2-D traces of 3-D renders to make sprites. Hell, I think that's what they did for a lot of Diablo 2. I don't think it looks quite the same though.

Probably the best you can do for now, is check out BlazBlue when it comes out in America. A high res 2-D fighter from the makers of Guilty Gear.
