StarCraft 2 Planned for Release This Year

51
StarCraft 2 is currently scheduled for a release at the end of this year, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime announced today in an Activision Blizzard pre-E3 conference call.

"We're targeting an end of year release--this year--for StarCraft 2," said Morhaime. "But as always, we won't release it until it meets our standards and the expectations of our players."

The first installment of the PC sci-fi strategy trilogy will be Terrans: Wings of Liberty, featuring a Terran singleplayer campaign and full multiplayer for all races. Both multiplayer and singleplayer will be expanded by Zerg: Heart of the Swarm and Protoss: Legacy of the Void, to come later and potentially years apart.

A closed beta of StarCraft 2--currently accepting signups--is set to begin this summer.

I dunno, don't they already have pro games playing the game? I remember watching two guys play against each other as the zerg and the terran. obviously the game is working fine, what's left is the content. and with only one racial mission storyline to worry about it probably won't be that hard. I'm convinced it's possible to come out this year.

2 cherry-picked videos of people playing in-house with no validation of stats and/or staging us not the same as being almost done.

It's a step up from a trailer, but not much.

It would be kind of cool if they released it on the anniversary of SC1.

They have been fielding this game to pro-SC players for months now. The official battle-reports are to show off the new Replay system basically. They also show how the new units handle in combat as well. They are basically just trailers for the super SC nerds.

Pro players? Those 2 were devs, one guy is Karune, and they both blew huge ones by even just the current starcraft noobie standards. That's how much SC has grown in the last 10 years.

Search for SC2 replays on youtube, you'll find plenty of them with pros playing.

Name a few? The pros you're talking about are the ones at blizcon who are invited for the starcraft exhibit and have played SC2 for a few hours.

And btw they all say the automated crap added to the controls and AI are bad for professional gaming.

I don't know.... if they get the beta ready by this summer, that should mean the game is pretty close to done.

Indeed. Guaranteed it won't make it. This is Blizzard we're talking about here.

It will be this year. On average, it takes Blizzard 2-3 years to release a game after they've formally announced it. We are coming up on the high end of that average. What you won't be getting this year or next is Diablo III. That will be a 2011 release.
