As job titles go, El Presidente is nigh on unbeatable. Haemimont Games's Tropico 3 offers not only that gilded office but the chance to hold it on an tropical island. Glorious.

While Tropico 2 took a detour into pirates, Tropico 3 returns to the series's roots--where players governed a banana republic and risked deposition or invasion if their politicking, construction or management skills were below par, but could oppress dissidents.

Published by Kalypso Media, Tropico 3 is scheduled for release on PC in September.

I wasn't aware of Tropico 2, but I thought Tropico 1 was fun.

Tropico 2 was cool but had a much bigger learning curve as it is a lot less forgiving. Your revenues were based on sending out pirate crews, which meant that you could be completely housed if a single boat run goes badly or if you screw up your initial build out. Once you understand all of the various dynamics at play then it isn't bad.

It also had a lot of nice UI and general improvements over 1 and Paradise Island.

Tropico 2 was a lot of fun, but I felt like it lost steam once you had your town up and running well. It's not like SimCity 4 were you can work on improving your infrastructure, improving residences, jobs, etc...

Tropico 2 used its Pirate theme very well IMHO. Honestly, it's still fun to play so if you can find it somewhere I'd recommend playing it.
