Evening Reading
by Nick Breckon, May 18, 2009 6:00pm PDTHeading off to record Idle Thumbs in a bit. Going to be a really boring 'cast this week, I expect. Nothing really happened over the past two weeks in video games. I guess I can talk about Plants vs. Zombies for an hour.

I've noticed that there's a growing tend of movies that aren't epic and life changing being called terrible or horrible. It's like there's some new unwritten rule that a movie has to have some deep, hidden moral for it to be worth anything these days.
Case and point - movies like The Mummy: Curse of the Dragon Emperor, Max Payne, The Pubisher: Warzone, and Taken. These are all movies that were completely panned by critics and the public, but are actually really fun movies that were made solely for entertainment's sake.
What happened to making movies for the hell of it? :(

Did those just run on PC's? And how did they manage to kick users after 30 min, etc? They all seemed fairly standardized in that.

About 10 months ago, I purchased a 'new' phone on ebay.
The phone can not be purchased in Australia (at least not in this colour) and cost me about 200$ US.
The phone worked fine for 5 months then stopped.
I emailed the seller, through ebay / paypal and my email records and never got a single response over 10 or so different emails, he sold less phones for a 2 month period.
Nokia Australia and Hong Kong (where it was likely purchased, locked and he illegally (?) unlocked it) refused to touch it.
He is now selling phones again on ebay, including the same model.
I looked after this phone, it's in fantastic condition it simply doesn't display anything on the screen.
What say I purchase the same model from him and then complain it's 'faulty' since he couldn't respond to my 10 emails.
I can guess there would be 2 outcomes to this.
1, I end up with 2 working phones.
2, I do an ebay chargeback and end up with 1 working phone.
Anyone done anything similar, I've never had a dispute as a buyer on ebay before.

I remember back in the day writing text adventure games when I was about five on my machine, it's pretty much what got me interested in programming. I'd run out of games to play so I picked up the manual and tried to figure out what this "BASIC" thing was.
Fast forward to modern day consoles, the only thing you can do on them is play games (however you can do graphical based programming in games like Little Big Planet etc). Now when you learn to program, you start much later on in life. Usually around university level? Maybe a few years before that.
Do you think the lack of a built in programming language on consoles is going to affect the next generation of programmers because they're going to be starting later?
