Wall Street Journal Corroborates Xbox 360 Motion Camera Rumors
by Nick Breckon, May 12, 2009 6:32pm PDTThe Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft will announce a 3D camera capable of detecting and interpreting motion, adding credence to rumors of the device in advance of June's E3.
The paper cites "people familiar with the matter" in its story, reiterating that the camera would sit near a television and capture the motion of players in 3D space.
According to the Journal, Microsoft was developing a motion controller in the vein of Nintendo's Wii remote, but scrapped the plans sometime last year. Microsoft is now purportedly showing the technology to independent game developers to generate interest.
While the camera might be unveiled at this year's E3, the sources say that it likely will not make it to market before the end of the year.

Johnny Lees wii-mote head tracking hack. He paced the wii-mote next to the TV to track the player and feed their position back into the 3D engine to update the scene in real time. The effect is pretty amazing and I've been surprised that one of the big players hasn't made this a standard option yet.

I'm still waiting for a motion controller that will work well for "hardcore" games

Be very interesting to see what they do with this. The key thing of course is the software, we'll see if MS understand that as well as Nintendo, and how to appeal to this new market.
