Dragon Age's New Direction Heralded with 'New Shit'
by Nick Breckon, May 10, 2009 10:54pm PDTI don't really know what to say about this Dragon Age: Origins (360, PS3, PC) trailer. BioWare calls it the "most brutal and blood-soaked video we've ever created.. a 'no holds barred' look at the most intense action ever seen in the history of BioWare games."
The company says this "shit" represents a "new direction for Dragon Age: Origins"--apparently confirming a shift from its roots in the old shit.

So called "graphic violence" in video games never actually looks like real violence. Spurts of blood shooting out everywhere and big bloody mist clouds, and guys getting swords shoved through them are things that it would be horrible to see in person, but in video games the combination of models, animations, and sound all being somewhat less than "realistic" adds up to an overall experience that is substantially less than real, and so in the end the "graphic violence" doesn't really bother most people because it doesn't come across as convincing enough to be upsetting, just enough to be "ooh he got crushed by that, cool!"
Sex in the games is the same way but with the opposite effect, all that "unrealistic" stuff that makes violence that would be stomach turning in real life, ok to see in a game, applies to sex too and in the end what you end up with is something thats arousing and interesting and enjoyable when real people do it, that is just awkward and stupid looking when you try to make animated characters do it.
