Dragon Age's New Direction Heralded with 'New Shit'

I don't really know what to say about this Dragon Age: Origins (360, PS3, PC) trailer. BioWare calls it the "most brutal and blood-soaked video we've ever created.. a 'no holds barred' look at the most intense action ever seen in the history of BioWare games."

The company says this "shit" represents a "new direction for Dragon Age: Origins"--apparently confirming a shift from its roots in the old shit.

Haha. Honestly I don't want this game. I have no idea how Bioware managed to suicide so hard but somewhere between Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic they completely lost me. I'll even wait for Orb and the Oracle (Dungeon Lords 2 haha) over this dogshit. Meanwhile there are actually awesome looking fantasy rpg stuff confirmed to be coming this year, Risen and Divinity 2 Ego Draconis. :O

The blood effect just looked fake with red spouting mist, no wound or decaps. (i'm a little spoiled by Wolverine Origins on the 360).

To hell with the lot of you. That looked fucking awesome. This trailer was the first time I could actually see anything of the George R R Martin influences they mentioned way back before we saw anything of the game, even if they were hidden under Marilyn Manson.

The marketing team for this title is atrocious - the music choice and general FUCK YEAH attitude here brought Warrior Within to mind, but it's a deliberate marketing and editing choice and I don't get the impression that's what the actual game will feel like. Graphic violence and sex handled badly can come off very easily as gratuitous and immature. But by the same token, in the right hands it can work towards a general sense of harsh reality, which is something almost completely missing from most fantasy games.

It could go either way, obviously, but based on Bioware's pedigree I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

They had to make "this new shit" and take it in a new direction because they more then likely realized their game story wasn't as rock solid or engaging as the Baldurs Gate series.

"Let's make this as bloody as humanly possible and focus on our fighting system."

This is what every "RPG" company does when story is lacking nowadays, instead of hiring more/better writers.

I mean... don't get me wrong. As a fan of NWN, I hope they get it right and that I'm wrong here. I just don't really think that'll be the case.

I'm guessing that the mallcore music video is the marquee because they're trying to bring in new fans, and those of us who care about gameplay videos are already gonna buy it anyway. Pausing and selecting commands isn't perhaps as sexy as new shit.

Dear Video Game Developers, please stop trying to do "sex" in video games. Half Naked woman in games don't look sexy or tempting, they look creepy. You cannot possibly use enough polygons or create detailed enough animations in real-time to make them look hot. You just create semi-uncomfortable awkwardness that makes your designers seem like lonely basement geeks and make us all look bad.

Can't seem to shake off the felling that the graphics in this game are rubbish. I wan't to like it, I really do, but I don't have ANY expectations of this title. Graphics seem bad, the whole direction odd, LOTR style fantasy world boring.

I just hope I'm wrong.

I think Bioware is messing things up with marketing. Every time something about Dragon Age shows up, lots of negative comments follow. it's really weird.

Why does everyone suddenly hate this game? I thought it looked wuite generic and mundane until this trailer, which promises something that MIGHT, just might be a more mature rpg than usual. Yes, we have all gotten huge epic quests regularly in our rpgs where we save the world and whatnot, but most have been quite mundane, barring gems like Hordes of the Underdark, The Witcher and Mass Effect.

So I take it they decided to ditch the entire pretense this is a 'spiritual successor' to Baldur's Gate in favor of appealing to the gore-crazed horny teenager demographic? Because that's the impression I got from that trailer "Omigosh boobs n blood n stuff wicked crazy heavy metal!".

Disappointing, but not really unexpected. Ah well! I'll go replay Baldur's Gate 2 for the hundredth time now and dream of little 3D Boo clinging to Minsc shoulder as he charges into battle.

Here's to hoping this "e-factor" approach to marketing games is a fad. Mimicking movie trailers just makes your game look a cgi movie with terrible rendering. This one in particular leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It looks like an action game or a fighter. Nobody buys a bioware game for the "shit" they just showed us. Their fans don't give a flying fuck about gore shooting all over the place. Please, please, don't try and be hollywood. Thanks.

A bit hardcore, a bit bloody, a bit of omgboobs, yes... But original? Definitely. If the game has this much action with but maintains the classic tactics-style combat of D&D, Baldur's Gate, or Neverwinter nights, then i will buy it, hands down. Very Fresh, Bioware.
