Morning Discussion

When I buy a new game, it usually sits idly by on my big stack o' unplayed games. Scores of classics live there, destined to be passed over every night in favour of Left 4 Dead or TF2--games I can load up at the end of a long day to just 'splode dudes.

Not so with Plants vs. Zombies. This game is marvellous. Matching your plants to the zombies, terrain and time of day is surprisingly 'hardcore' for a PopCap games. Plant and zombie designs are neat too--the Michael Jackson zombie is positively sublime.

The UI in regards to what? The taskbar? I can expect most users shitting themselves because they dont understand it. Other than that, the rest of the UI tweaks in explorer, the start menu and the system tray are needed and I don't see how or why they would change it at this stage.

        May 6, 2009 8:10 AM

the installer is pretty smart. I installed it to the same partition as my vista installation. Chose the 'custom' option. It moved all my windows files (including program files) to a folder called Windows.old and then installed windows 7. This effectively nukes the old windows installation but lets you access all your old windows files incase you forgot to back some shit up.

            May 6, 2009 8:21 AM

Upgrade is available, but different from what these guys are saying.

MS has asked you not to upgrade, because that's not what they are testing here. (Which seems silly..but oh well.)

However, several people in the thread have at least said they upgraded.

          • reply
            May 6, 2009 8:21 AM

its not an upgrade. You'll lose your vista installation and won't be able to boot back to it, and your settings/files dont get transferred to Windows 7. They simply get moved to a Windows.old folder so you can access them through explorer.

                May 6, 2009 8:31 AM

I think settings depends on the game. For all the files you just copy the steamapps directory over. A lot of games keep settings in your My Games folder in windows and stuff though.

      Windows 7 audio tip:

By default, Windows 7 will decrease the volume of applications and games by 80% if it detects "communications activity". This can be frustrating in a game like Left 4 Dead or Counterstrike where the voice channel is detected, and you can't figure out why your in-game volume is so low and tinny.

To correct this, go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound, the Communications tab, and choose "Do Nothing".

I spent all weekend wondering why my Source game sessions were so much quieter than the rest of my system sounds.

i would be playing TF2 and the Valve Guy splash screen sound would be LOUD, and then in-game i could barely hear any effects

i was worried sound was just fucked for my onboard chip and that i'd have to go back to XP :( happily, i discovered this "feature", which i guess would be okay in some desktop apps, but certainly not games

      Installation Size Question

What size partition should I create for this thing? ... and before anyone lectures me on still using partitions, this is for my Macbook.

I nuked my beta partition for the RC and I'm just doing 28GB. I forget how much I did before but I think that's probably more than enough since I spend the vast majority of my time in OSX anyway.

requires a min of 10GB just to allow it to install.

Minimum is 9.6 GB. But it would rather have 17GB or more.

ugh has anyone installed the 64-bit version via bootcamp with any success? it installs fine but when I try and install the windows device drivers from the OSX CD it says that bootcamp x64 is unsupported on this model computer. wtf I have a unibody MacBook, is it freaking out about Win7 or the computer? the 32-bit beta install worked great :(

it runs fine but no multitouch and I can't seem to eject anything from the DVD drive :( I installed some drivers individually (like the nvidia ones) but it's pretty hit and miss :(

I couldn't get them installed on the 32 bit version (in beta1 either). I'd posted about it multiple times with no success. I guess I must not have tried the DVD drive but the trackpad is definitely worthless, no way to right click at all. Of course, even with the drivers Apple's trackpad doesn't work well in Windows so using an external mouse is much better.

I had multi-touch working in 32-bit beta, though the acceleration was horrible but lack of right-click is pretty terrible :(

Yeah I have an older one so the most recent drivers for multitouch didn't support mine either. Even with the drivers the scrolling is horrible, the incidental touch detection isn't there, etc. I won't don my tinfoil hat to explain...

You need the 64-bit drivers for boot camp that I think Apple only provides on the leopard CDs that come with Mac Pros. There are ways to get it, though.

damnit the installer refuses to run :( even with Vista compatibility mode and running as administrator (both of which are a pain in the ass to do without right-click) it still starts up and then promptly dies :( I should just give up and install the 32-bit version :(

So I've got a netbook with no optical drive, and Win7 on a DVD, but no USB stick. I used to install 98 by copying the disc to my hard drive and booting to command prompt only and install from there. Can I do this for Win7?

windows update could still use more work, nowhere near enough feedback on whats going on. If the first update to be installed is a big one, it looks like its stalled.

It's good 'til March 1st 2010. Then it starts rebooting every 2 hours, and finally it drops into 'reduced function' mode on June 1st.

Anyone having problems with the keyboard volume control no longer showing the green bar in the bottom right whenever you increase/decrease the volume? It used to be an OSD that came with the Microsoft IntelliType software, but I don't see it on screen now.

I like the desktop wallpaper slide show setting. no more getting bored of the same background. you can also right click the desktop and pick the next one if you don't want to wait the 30 minutes or hour or whatever.

      It's the little things!

Also, be sure to grab the hidden backgrounds for the various region specific themes, some of them are pretty rad:

      HELP

I assume the blue and yellow shield icon has something to do with UAC or admin privileges. But I'm using an admin account and when I click something with that icon next to it, nothing happens. I don't get any confirmation dialog or anything. I can't turn off UAC because that has the shield next to it.
