This trailer for Terminator Salvation, with its use of the classic Terminator theme, really has me wanting an actual Terminator game. You know, one where you are evading and only occasionally fighting a single Arnold-skinned Terminator, and not a million generic robots.

Terminator Salvation isn't that game, but it's still coming on May 19 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

I really don't think a game where you just tried to evade one robot would be all that much fun.

Why not? Obviously there would be other things to do in the game.

A "Shadow of the Colossus" approach to Terminator, if you will. Maybe a few dialogue trees would be involved. A little mystery and exploration--followed by a crazy chase sequence by an AI-powered Terminator that could chase you around an open world.

I dunno. I mean, I like the first movie, I just can't picture being on the run the whole game being fun. It would either end up annoying (like Nemesis in RE3, or that thing in Metroid Fusion), or it would just be too tense all the time and hard to really enjoy.

I was thinking more of a GTA model, where the Terminator would essentially be in the role of the cops. Occasionally you'd do something to draw its attention and it'd be after you.

Anyway, even if it didn't work, I'd be more interested in something along those lines than another third-person action game with Terminator skins.

You read my mind dude. It'd totally be open world GTA style. Imagine the cool ass crap that would be possible. I'm thinking Terminator 2 and 3 especially. With the firetrack ladder being rammed into buildings, and the T-1000 remotely controlling other machines. Pretty tight.

And integrate some sara connor chronicle story style stuff to provide lots of missions that could expose you to the terminators.

Agreed. Terminators are terrifying because they absolutely will not stop ever until you're dead. When they absolutely will not stop ever until you shoot them at LEAST three times, ehh, not so terrifying. So any Terminator game with a higher endoskeleton count than body count is pushing the limits of what the Terminator stories can allow, in my view.

I disagree. I find Terminators to be the most terrifying when they're robotic beetles running around in circles and firing blue lasers at people behind cover.

Except the opposite is true: the robotic beetles shooting lasers should be scared shitless of you, because you're going to destroy them, their friends, their pets, and their friends' pets, and they will be lucky to have killed three or four of you.

When a war against the machines is so easily and ridiculously fought (some of these videos looked like a cat running around furniture to avoid a Roomba), there is no tension. They're the Windows Me of Terminators.

you would most likely need to dodge cops too

I can understand what your saying regarding Terminators attacking you in groves in our time
line that would be stupid. We need to remember the whole idea of a world dominated by Terminators in the future " Terminator Salvation" it does make since having Terminators around every corner or in every building. This worked pretty good with the Terminator game Future Shock and again in Skynet. I look forword of using stealth sneaking around trying to stay alive.

i can imagine a dynamic where that would be a lot of fun... mix in crowds, malls, driving ... etc..

Opinions are opinions, but check your thoughts against Resident Evil 3: Nemesis for a scripted example of one-on-one combat against a vastly superior foe, or Shadow of the Colossus for something more dynamic.

I'd find it extremely fun to play a subtle plot driven gave with relative freedom in highly destructable enviroments, using a limited range of low tech weapons to lure and slowly cripple individual endoskeletal enemies toward potential kill-zones, such as falls, crushing industrial machinery, molten metal, high security locked facilities, etc. Each day, delaying him and damaging him in ways that show later as crippling injuries that alter his behaviour while he tries to repair himself between engagements.

Variety and freedom of choice would be instilled by how you deal with the other humans who fail to understand the conflict- killing/incapacitating/evading cops who think you're a danger to other humans, crowd panic dynamics when the machine attacks in public places.. Your choices in how you deal with humans also influencing later events based upon whether people aid you or hinder you based upon whether they think you a hero being hunted by a beast or a psycho with a dangerous friend nearby.

Could be a very entertaining game, if only a creative enough studio attempted it.

As said above. It would work well in a GTA style environment.

I have to agree. No offense Nick, but that idea sounds like it would be fun for about 10 minutes.

The old Bethesda Terminator game ( http://terminator.wikia.com/wiki/The_Terminator_(1990_Game) ) from 1990 was awesome. Streaming open world, vehicles, indoor/outdoor environemnt. And the best part? You could either be THE terminator (only one in the game) and hunt Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese or you could be Kyle Reese hunting the terminator and protecting Sarah Connor.

You could also use a null modem cable and play head to head against someone else and hunt each other.

So many hours spent driving and walking around, stockpiling weapons, trying to evade and then engage the opposition -- tense, fun action. A hell of a lot more fun and more of a mind game than the typical whack-a-mole crap that comes out these days.
