Vicious Reading
by Nick Breckon, May 04, 2009 6:00pm PDTWhat a pain. I was about to rename ER to "Visceral Reading," but EA beat me to it. This seemed the next best option with which to reflect our hardcore gamer blood.
Come to think of it, I don't want anything to do with you guys and your blood--and especially not your filthy DNA.
Some of today's savage news:
- Plants vs. Zombies demo released
- Fallout 3 Broken Steel trailer
- The Demoman reviews Tomb Raider: Underworld
- Thief sequel to be announced next week?
- First footage of TMNT: Turtles in Time remake
- Red Orchestra sequel features German single-player campaign
- BioWare opens up on Dragon Age DRM plans
Lastly, another reminder that Shacknews exists on Twitter. Feel free to follow me, too. And Faylor. And definitely Alice. She feeds on your attention, that girl. Though she is, for the record, a truly terrifyingly bad StarCraft opponent.

I had a laptop come in because some idiot decided to let his daughter use it for the weekend. He called me and said "Remember how you told me this was a work laptop and I should only use it for work and never let my kids touch it ever? I should have listened..." Anyways, it was an easy cleanup except not. Everything was showing as clean. Local network stuff worked fine, just no internet in IE and even when I installed Firefox, no internet. However, I could "telnet google.com 80" type get and get the HTML back so I knew the network connection was fine. I knew DNS was fine. So wtf?!
Proxy server. Part of the payload was to re-direct everything through a local proxy server and the proxy server was nuked, but the settings were not. I spent way too god damned long on that little fucker.

We keep all of our stuff (database, sites, etc) in a common directory instead of spreading them out across the whole server:
i.e. /abc/sites, /abc/mysql/, etc...
Well I thought I was in a subdirectory, but I was in /abc/ when I typed this:
The files I was deleting were large so I wasn't surprised when it took awhile. I got to doing something else and by the time I noticed something was wrong our 80GB database was gone. :(
Our latest backup was from Sunday at 11PM but everyone in the company and all our external users (a few thousand) lost everything they did today. :(
TLDR: Fuck.

Lately we have had a few people make fake accounts of regulars and proceed to make troll posts. While I'm sure this is totally lols when you are plotting it, it will result in at least an instant one month ban from here on out. If it persists the ban times will increase. I love you all like JFK loves convertibles so please refrain from making us hurt you.

right now its bonding together with jbweld, this other stuff that i used didnt fix it and make everything all sticky because i guess i didnt mix it enough. the other side was cracking also so i just duct taped that together but if this jbweld works (which im pretty sure it will) ill just go ahead and make a preemptive strike and douse the shit out of it

I like using it for games so i can quickly scan through if i ever get the impulse to buy a new game just for the sake of it. I dont read too much into the score, since its arbitary bullshit, but its a good indicator of: poor/average/good.
Having just seen the score of "the spirit", how it has been rated is completely fucking unfair. Every single contributing score has been from an American newspaper - which seems a little bias considering that news paper reviews are generally the most narrowminded and pandering ones you'll ever find (for fun read some of 30-40 scores for TDK).

going to be trading down to a room half the size.
"for the baby", the one that doesn't exist yet but might come in the next couple of years.
i guess having a huge 20' * 12' room just for my PC, Mac, and legacy consoles was kind of ludicrous right?
Time for an 8' * 12' room
You know that babies need tons of space to move around

"Malsburg's results indicate that cortical
organization is not genetically predetermined. These results are also commensurate with the
findings of dramatic experiments such as those conducted by Hirsh & Spinelli (1970), who
raised kittens wearing goggles so that they could only see horizontal line segments in one eye
and vertical line segments with the other. A rewiring of the visual cortex took place so that
cells connected to the first eye only developed horizontal receptive fields, cells connected to the
second only had vertical orientation, and the number of binocular cells that responded to both
eyes decreased dramatically."
